More Injuries, More Recalls

Matt Bodenschatz | Pittsburgh Penguins

The big news of the week came Tuesday afternoon when Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Ray Shero pulled the trigger on, quite possibly, one of the biggest trades in franchise history.

But just over 48 hours after the move was made, the centerpiece, Marian Hossa, has followed the path that so many Penguins have taken this season.

Hossa, who managed to last roughly half way through his Penguins debut, will miss roughly a week with a sprained medial collateral ligament.

“It’s really disappointing,” Hossa told Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “When I dropped the puck to [defenseman Sergei Gonchar], there was a little hit, knee-on-knee. It was just an accident.”

Also injured in the game was defenseman Ryan Whitney, who is listed as day-to-day with a groin pull.

Rob Scuderi, who left early in Tuesday’s game with a finger injury, will miss up to four weeks while he recuperates from surgery.

As a result, the Penguins have recalled forward Connor James and defenseman Alex Goligoski.

Both players are expected to be in the lineup tomorrow when the Penguins play the Ottawa Senators.

I didn’t know Whitney was also injured.

You know, this injury bug is almost comical. The Pens keep losing their players, key players at that. It’s a small miracle that the team has been able to avoid a free fall in the standings.

Is anyone else just a little bit nervous every time Malkin steps out on the ice?

To answer your question: yes. It just seems that anyone with any importance somehow finds a way to get hurt. Let’s hope this is just a regular season issue and it disappears just before the playoffs.
