Mar 12, 10:41 AM | Hype this story!

According to the Post-Gazette, Sidney Crosby will miss tonights game against the Buffalo Sabres due to pain in his right ankle.

Crosby recently returned from injury against Tampa Bay last week and played in three games before being unable to perform tonight.

The Penguins next game is Sunday against Philadelphia, so Crosby will have several days off to re-test the ankle and possibly return to the lineup.

As reported in the game preview, Buffalo is suffering from injury problems of their own.

My only reaction is to laugh. It’s been that way since Crosby’s first injury in January.

Check out the Canuck’s injury situation for the year too, it is quite respectable (at one point they had only one defenceman (a rookie) from the top six at the start of year playing for a couple games).

According to what I’ve heard, the problem here is the way the skates are made these days. This does appear to be the case.

In a nutshell; the culprit is today’s corporate capitalist greed. Seriously.

Quality and safety are being severely sacrificed and compromised to maximize the corporate profits of the skate manufacturer/marketer.

What is needed is the proper materials and workmanship to assure enough flexibility in the ankle area of the skate, to help prevent injury. But corporate greed has won out, so that the
most “cost-effective” blueprint is used .. a rigid piece of hard plastic-like stuff .. instead of good quality leather and careful workmanship, etc.

It’s all in the name of maximizing corporate profits at the expense of the safety of the players. Just pure insanity and greed.

This is an outrage. I wish Faceoff-Factor would investigate this subject .. maybe interview someone about it. This is a situation that is jeopardizing Sidney Crosby’s career .. not just this season’s playoffs for the Penguins. The skates need to at least be made with a reasonable amount of safety for the players in-mind. The NHL should immediately confront the skate manufacturers.

A big reason for the stiffness in the new skate boots is the added protection it gives against pucks. Sure, the skates in the 90’s give a little more, but don’t hold up to a puck nearly as well as the new ones.

I really don’t think any of this is due to “corporate capitalist greed,” but manufacturers trying to find a happy medium between mobility and protection in a boot.

I personally like a stiff boot because my ankles turn over on themselves a little too easily.

I do see the rationale coming from the media (and you) that these new boots are much too stiff, but I think you are making much too big a deal of it. I’m sure the NHL and manufacturers are doing what they can to make a PERFECT product.

Nathan – I heard the same thing as you. The skates are stiff in order to decrease the chance that you’ll break your foot if you get hit by a puck. Unfortunately, this increases the risk of high ankle sprains.

There really is no winning here.

The high-ankle sprain .. from the rigid skate casing .. is quite a bit more serious, and probably more likely .. than getting a direct hit on the ankle-area by a puck, I would think .. ?

I think the safety issue in terms of a gross lack of flexibility for the ankle, has been “conveniently” overlooked by the manufacturers .. which is corporate greed and/or irresponsibility.

Think about this. It is quite simple and “cost-effective” in terms of “manufacturer blueprint”, to install a very stiff, rigid piece of material as a “protection” against possible hits from pucks. But it is NOT “cost-effective” to use enough genuine leather, enough good-quality padding-materials, and good workmanship .. in order to insure flexibility and safety for the players.

Do not minimize the greed and irresponsibility in big business .. it has become rampant in our society. And this is but another example of it.

Or maybe it’s the ice, the ice isn’t made the way they used to anymore…
