Summary

The Pittsburgh Penguins couldn’t close out their series against the New York Rangers tonight, losing 3-0.  Henrik Lundqvist was tremendous in goal, stopping Ryan Malone on a shorthanded breakaway and Evgeni Malkin on a penalty shot, to post the shutout.

The Penguins were guilty of taking too many penalties throughout the night, and their penalty killers just couldn’t keep up the same pace as they have in the playoffs.  The game was face paced, but a low scoring affair that was not made any easier by the Penguins lack of conversion on the powerplay, going 0-4 tonight.

The Rangers, playing for the lives in the playoffs, held strong after getting the lead, never really showing signs of worry or tire.  Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin were surprisingly absent from impact tonight, and even took themselves out of a powerplay, that’s right, both of them, when they couldn’t hold their tempers in the 3rd period.  On the opposite side of the rink, the Rangers got solid play from Jaromir Jagr, who has shown a desire unlike many have seen of him in recent years figuring in on all 3 of the Rangers goals.

Everyone said Lundqvist would steal a game in this series— looks like this was it.

However, I found the officiating terrible— the Rangers got away with a ton as the Pens penalty box apparently had a revolving door on it.

Malkin’s breakaway— the puck sure looked to me like it was in the net before the net came off. 1-1 there would have made it a totally different game.

But when we started the series I didn’t expect us to sweep, so this one wasn’t a huge surprise.

Michael, I agree on all accounts, though I suppose I can understand how they didn’t give Malkin the goal — it supposed to be conclusive evidence to contradict what the officials said on the ice, and while it definitely looked to be in, I’m not sure it was 100% conclusive due to the fuzziness of the pictures.

But, as you said, they were bound to lose at some point, and I’d rather see them lose for the first time in the playoffs when they’re up 3-0 than in a more meaningful game.

I agree with both of you guys. Now, let’s see our guys bounce back. I’m waiting for it!

The issue with the Malkin no-goal call wasn’t whether it went in the net – it was whether it went in the net before the net came off the moorings. I can’t honestly say that there was conclusive evidence that the puck crossed the line before the net came off.

I don’t think the calls were too bad, overall, to be honest. Let’s not be like Rangers fans and whine about the officiating. The Pens simply didn’t look like they came to play playoff hockey last night. I suspect getting asked about going 16-0 by reporters after Tuesday’s game put it in their heads that they simply wouldn’t lose. Now, hopefully, they’ll get back to playing playoff hockey, like they had for the previous 7 games.
