Pittsburgh sports teams have fared well in their trips to Detroit for championships. Not only do the Penguins have that playing to their advantage, but there is another interesting fact. In both circumstances, the Pittsburgh team opened a new stadium around the same time.
1909 World Series – Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Detroit Tigers
The Pirates were able to squeek out a victory in seven games. It was also this year that Forbes Field was opened.
2006 – Super Bowl – Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Seattle Seahawks
Alright, so a Detroit team was not involved in this one. However, the game was played in Detroit. The Steelers held off the Seahawks for a 21-10 victory. Heinz Field was opened less than five years prior to the Steelers victory.
The Penguins are the only Pittsburgh team that has yet to win a championship in Detroit. Now is their opportunity, a couple years prior to the opening of their new arena. Their quest will begin on Saturday.
