I wish this would hurry up already so all this is settled somewhat. I’m going crazy! lol
Roberts moving on has really surprised me.

I believe on Bomboulie’s WBS Pens’ blog, he mentioned Nathan Smith may be looking at going to Europe as well.

    When is Fleury’s arbitration date?

No date set, yet, to my knowledge, but I think they begin in late July.

The list has been updated to show a larger contingency of players from the AHL, Canadian Juniors, and Europe.

It is staggering to look at the holes in the forward line-up. I wouldn’t mind seeing Staal moved to LW on Malkin’s line and seeing Stone as fourth line center.

  8. Pens1967

    Jun 28, 08:47 PM

What about a trade with Philly for Joff Lupul? The Flyers are up against the cap and need to move someone in order to sign Jones and Emminger.

  9. Justin Maffei

    Jun 28, 11:18 PM

I would be surprised if the Flyers would be willing to trade a young, up-and-comer like Lupul, especially to us.

  10. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jun 29, 01:03 AM

Don’t bank on any meaningful trades between the Pens an any of their division rivals, let along the Flyers.

Personally, I have a very interesting viewpoint on free agency, and it goes a little something like this:

Since Shero apparently offered Hossa somewhere in the range of $7 million, we have to assume he was willing to commit to at least $8 million for his top line wingers. So, sign two players from the free agent crop — one veteran, and one younger player — for a total of $7 to $8 million in salary per season. Of course, the younger player should be locked in longer than the older player.

Then, bump Staal to the second line left wing position.

Now, to fill in the rest of the forwards, the Penguins already have Talbot and Kennedy under contract. Lock in Dupuis, and you have a speedy, defensive line that has a nice scoring upside. Then re-sign Hall and Taffe as the forward extras, as they both are nice guys to have as injury fill-ins or specialty players that are used against specific types of teams. They’re both cheap and effective.

Lastly, and this s the interesting part, why not re-sign Ruutu and target Tucker and Peca? The worry right now is that the Penguins could become significantly less physical with the departures of Malone, Roberts and potentially Orpik and Laraque. Tucker was just bought out, which means he already will be making a decent amount of money from his previous contract. Potentially, this could mean he’d be willing to take a little less to play for a team that would give him a shot at the Cup. And, with Peca aging, he might also be seeking a good Cup situation.

A fourth line of Ruutu, Tucker and Peca would eliminate the need for a true enforcer, and certainly would serve as a deterrent for anyone looking to headhunt against the Penguins. Sure, these guys all have a nasty reputation and Tucker certainly is hated by Penguins fans, but having a “superpest” line could be a realistic and affordable way to fill the fourth line. And let’s not forget that Peca is both a faceoff specialist and penalty killing fiend.

    (Naslund) – Crosby – (Hagman)
    Staal – Malkin – Sykora
    Dupuis – Talbot – Kennedy
    Ruutu – Peca – Tucker

I certainly could see this lineup making some noise, and I really don’t think it’s out of the question, both in terms of salary and mentality. Keep in mind, Shero grew up in the locker room of the Broad Street Bully Flyers and loves his physical players.

  11. Tybrus

    Jun 29, 02:24 AM

    Ruutu – Peca – Tucker

Would be on par for about 10,000 PIMs and would possibly be my favorite line of all time. No one, and I mean NO ONE would want to be on the other side of the faceoff circle against that line.

  12. Pens1967

    Jun 29, 03:33 AM

The Flyers might not want to trade with the Pens, but they do have to dump salary if they want to resign Jones and Emminger. They could buy out Hatcher and/or Knuble, but that only pushes their cap issues to next year. After the playoffs he had, who’d have thought they’d get rid of Umbarger? The Pens could still even make an offer for him, too. Further, there’s no reason the Pens couldn’t use a cutout to get Lupul.

I would much prefer trading for or making a reasonable offer sheet to an RFA than sign another over-the-hill player like we did with Recchi, Palfy and LeClaire, who didn’t exactly pan out as expected.

  13. Pens1967

    Jun 29, 09:28 AM

It’s interesting of the all the rumors at Spector’s Hockey today, not one involves Hossa.

  14. Mike Wilson

    Jun 29, 10:16 AM

A line with Peca, Tucker, and Ruutu would be a dream team. No doubt that it is in reach, but Shero’s going to have to play his cards extra right to get EVERYTHING to fall in line. Which I’m not doubting that he will.

As for Hossa, I agree with Pens 67…it’s all very interesting. I’m not sure whether to take his name not appearing anywhere as a sign he’s staying or leaving. He knows that he won’t find a team that is still willing to offer him good money while keeping him with one of the best passers in the league in Crosby…and winning all the while.

All in all, I can’t remember July 1st ever being so anticipated as it is now (at least not in Pittsburgh)...this is a free agency frenzy for the ages.

  15. Pens1967

    Jun 29, 10:43 AM

Yesterday on 1250, Rossi commented that some of things he’s hearing off the record from other agents, NHL execs, etc, is that the Pens may have set the market for Hossa. I’ve thought the same for a couple of weeks.

I think it’s possible, too, that teams know Hossa’s preference is to stay in Pgh
and therefore are acting accordingly. It’s sort of like at work when there’s a job opening but “everyone” “knows” who’s going to get the job and therefore don’t bother to apply because they believe they have no chance.

I agree on not seeing any serious SC contender team making an offer that much higher than what the Pens did.

  16. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jun 29, 11:18 AM

At this point, I’ve examined the Hossa situation with a level head, assuming he would be gone. With the lack of rumors leading up to free agency, it has me re-thinking that possibility, but my sentiment remains the same.

How logical is it to keep one superstar winger for Crosby at the cost of $7 million per season, while sacrificing offensive depth? If one of the big three (Crosby, Malkin and Hossa) goes down, the Penguins essentially would revert to a one-line team, as they did this past season when Crosby was injured. Obviously it worked out okay that time around, but I’m not sure the team would be so lucky if it happens again.

Now compare the same situation to one where the Penguins bring in a skilled veteran such as Naslund or Stillman along with a talented first-time free agent, such as Vrbata, Huselius or Hagman. If one player — regardless of name — gets hurt on either of the top two lines, things still look okay.

But, I’ve said it time and again, Shero has given me zero reason not to trust him (aside from a few minor blunders: Recchi in 07-08, Sydor, and Ekman), so why should anything change now. I will assume that whatever he does, he has a significant plan in place to put together a competitive roster, not only for this season, but for years to come.

It’s an exciting time, to say the least.

  17. Tom

    Jun 30, 12:01 AM

Matt, I should rather see a line of Avery, Ruutu and Laraque if one of them could play center. Tucker is not a great physical player and is only annoying. At least Avery can be physical, annoying and has some offensive talent. I do not see any great value in Peca and the last thing the Pens need is another older center. Although I am not fond of Avery, he is far better than Peca or Tucker. On second thought take all three, they ought to be reasonably priced and could annoy the hell out of everyone. I even suspect that Peca and Avery could play the trap well. There is something to be said for having the most hated team in the NHL. If only we could add Chris Pronger.

  18. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jun 30, 09:30 AM

Avery is looking for around $4 million per season, so that should put an end to Avery discussion. But aside from that, I agree, if you’re looking for a pest, he’s the guy you want.

Peca is one of the league’s top penalty killers and faceoff specialists, plus he knows how to agitate and will come cheaply. The Penguins’ oldest center is Talbot, who is around 23, so I’m not sure where the “another older center” comment originates. In fact, considering Sydor, at age 36, is the oldest player on the team, I’m not sure where any statement regarding older players could be valid.

But I agree, having a hated line to deter some of the shenanigans frequently thrown in the direction of the superstars certainly wouldn’t be bad.

  19. Justin

    Jun 30, 12:22 PM

I have heard from a few people (none of which a credible news source) that there has been talk of the Penguins going after Colby Armstrong during free agency and attempting to get him back in Pgh. I do not know what the details are of his contract, or whether or not the rumors are any more than just that. However, it seems to me that he is a possible grinding winger that could play on a line with either Crosby/Hossa or Malkin/Sykora. Granted, he does not have the presence in front of the net that was there with Malone but he is a physical, hard-working winger that has the ability to put the puck in the net and keep enforcers off of guys like Crosby.

Has anyone else heard anything on this or know if these are just hopeful fans blowing smoke about one of the former “fan-favorites”?

  20. TIM

    Jun 30, 12:56 PM

Justin I really hope they don’t go after Colby Armstrong. I am a very positive Pens fan, but even I will say he has no business on either of the top 2 lines. He missed the net every chance he got, and while he is willing to throw his body around he is not an enforcer In my opinion.

  21. Brandon

    Jun 30, 01:14 PM

Tom, while I respect Avery as a great player of his role, I hate the guy. Its not just one of those, “I hate him because he doesn’t play for us” things. I’m almost certain that if the Pens signed Avery, I would boo every time he was on the ice, if not just boycott the season(s).

Justin, I had also heard from a few people that Armstrong was a prospect. I think if they move Stall to the second line, you’d almost have to put Armstrong on the first line. Yeah, he isn’t great, but can he fill Dupius’ spot? I think so.

  22. Pens1967

    Jun 30, 01:26 PM

Aside from a few decent players, the pickings are really rather slim in this UFA class. What are everyone’s thoughts on the Pens filling at least a few of their open slots through trades rather than UFAs? Also, if I’m Shero I’m looking at some RFAs that could be had for under 1M which carry very low draft choice compensation.

I wouldn’t mind having Armstrong back at all. He’s the kind of gritty, hardworking player all teams need to fill out their rosters.

As for Marian Hossa, I know the Rangers are supposed to be a big favorite to sign him, but I wonder if Marcel’s experience there would sour Marian on playing in the Big Apple.

  23. Ashley Gallant

    Jun 30, 03:29 PM

If I’m not mistaken, Army’s under contract for another year so the only way Pgh would get him back would be to trade for him. I love the guy and was sad to see him go, but he’s not the type of player Shero should be targeting tomorrow. The Pens need someone who is going to contribute offensively – which was not really Colby’s strength in Pgh. I think the rumours out there originate with fans who want Army back in a Pens uniform.

Pens – I don’t think Shero could actually get an RFA for under 1M because even if he signed someone to an offer sheet for that amount of money, that player’s team would almost certainly match the salary. Shero would have to offer an RFA a lot of money, almost to the point of overpaying (if not outright overpaying), and I’m not sure it would be worth it.

As for the whole Avery discussion, I would not want to see him anywhere near a Pens jersey. He may be the best agitator in the NHL and he may be able to contribute offensively, but he is also one heck of a distraction on and off the ice. I want absolutely nothing to do with that joke.

  24. Pens1967

    Jun 30, 03:45 PM

You don’t think the Pens could pick up a decent RFA for under 2.5M total for say, 2, yrs? Wouldn’t an established young player be worth a second round choice?

The RFA compensation table for 2008-09 is:

    Amount Compensation Due
    $863,156 or less None
    $863,156 – $1,307,811 3rd round pick
    $1,307,811 – $2,615,623 2nd round pick
    $2,615,623 – $3,923,434 1st, 3rd rd pick
    $3,923,434 – $5,231,246 1st, 2nd, 3rd rdrs
    $5,231,246 – $6,539,061 2 1st’s, 2nd, 3rd
    $6,539,061+ 4 1st round picks

  25. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jun 30, 04:38 PM

Pens, I don’t think the question is whether it would be worth it, but rather would the original team let the player go?

Say, for example, Shero offers a young RFA a $2.5 million contract. The opposing GM has two options: match the offer and keep a solid young player, or take a second round pick from a team likely to have a very low pick in that round. Chances are, the offer is going to be matched.

It would seem the only way such player would be lured away is if the offer sheet is riduculous to the point where taking the draft pick makes more sense than signing the contract — and, at that point, I have to wonder if it would be smart business for Shero to so grossly overpay.

  26. Pens1967

    Jun 30, 05:40 PM

Well, what about RFAs on teams that are on teams, like Philly for example, that are close to the cap?

  27. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jun 30, 05:51 PM

    That could be an exception.

  28. Pens1967

    Jun 30, 06:13 PM

Thanks for the discussion on RFAs.

I guess we’ll see tomorrow what Shero will do.

  29. Pens1967

    Jul 1, 07:36 AM

According to Molinari at the P-G, Hossa has not turned down Shero’s offer. This is different from Rossi’s report that Hossa did turn it down.

Supporting Molinari’s reporting is that Shero didn’t trade Hossa’s rights after making his offer. It makes me believe Hossa does want to sign in Pgh. It could be that Hossa compromised with Winter to wait until today to sign. Hossa gets what he wants (to re-sign) and Winter gets what he wants (to be able to say he tried to get the best deal for his client).

However, the down side is that the Hossa drama is clearly hanging up negotiations with everyone else.

  30. Pens1967

Kind of surprised about the Eaton resigning.
Even without Orpik, that leaves 7 d-men although it does cover 09-10 when Gill and Sydor’s contracts are UFAs.

    Jul 1, 06:44 PM

i’m sorry but i’m not a big fan of the resigning of mark eaton. so once again if we don’t sign anyone else and orpik leaves, we will have ONE physical defenseman … again.

i just don’t really care for mark eaton. you can find a defenseman out there who does what he does and is physical cause that is what i believe we will be sorely missing next year (unless we can grab someone).

Who’s left in the Hossa sweepstakes?

Boston keeps getting mentioned, but they only have 6M+ of cap space left and still have an arbitration hearing with Wideman coming up.

NYR are probably going to concentrate on Jagr now as they’ve spent half (13.5M) on today’s signings. They still have to sign a few more forwards, too.

Edmonton is up against the cap, too. They have only 4M+ of space left.

Vancouver has 19M of space, but they are in the Sundin hunt.

I think the Pens still have the best deal in terms of team and salary on the table.

Matt, I was being sarcastic regarding getting Avery, Tucker, etc. for an all hated line; however, with the acquisition of a stiff goon like Godard and with Bertuzzi in free agency, think of the possibilities! So far free agency is a disaster. A stiff/goon, a third liner and a cripple — good going Ray. By the way, I did estimate $8,700,000 for Malkin over a month ago because it made sense. Now with Sydor and Godard, we have two stiffs to get rid of. I would rather go with kids than the available stiffs in free agency. Bring up Caputi, Jeffrey, Curry, CPZ and Goligoski. Keep Taffe, Laraque, Ruutu and Orpik.

  36. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jul 1, 10:33 PM

Bob, at Eaton,s bargain basement price, he’s definitely a solid signing, especially if Orpik doesn’t sign. I definitely don’t believe this to be a sign that Orpik is or isn’t coming — it’s just a depth signing.

Pens, I heard Edmonton, Rangers, Montreal and Penguins. I would agree that, based on salary and potential to win, the Pens have the best scenario for Hossa.

Tom, I disagree that free agency is a disaster so far. Good things come to those who wait, and some of the biggest prizes remain on the market. I’m not even about to think of grading free agency yet. Have some patience.

  37. brd9002

    Jul 1, 11:37 PM

In looking at the depth chart – am I panicking or is their not a lot of potential NHL scoring coming out of Scranton.

It seems like there are some great role players – but none of them look like goal scorers. Maybe Caputi – how far away is he from being here? Hasn’t the boat sailed on Filewich? Our role players are great to cheer for – but they were outclassed by Detroit. Tyler Kennedy was a spark-plug – but he doesn’t seem capable of hitting the net.

Please re-assure me – I’m really getting nervous

  38. Pens1967

    Jul 2, 05:42 AM

The Godard signing is completely dumbfounding. He’s definately cheaper than Laraques, but he apparently has little or no other skill. I understand this was a salary cap move to get a goon for less than they paid Laraques. But, Therrien is a four line coach and if Godard can’t play, Therrien isn’t going to suit him up unless it’s an obvious game where thuggery is likely to take place. MT benched Ruutu for dumb play. Can you imagine what he’ll do with Godard?

I would have preferred a tryout for Bissonette in the enforcer role and then look for someone if he failed.

I would also have preferred that the money spent on Godard been spent signing Adam Hall, who was a skilled and useful player.

  39. Pens1967

    Jul 2, 06:21 AM

I noticed Phoenix didn’t qualify Marcel Hossa, so he’s out there. He won’t command much money, but he’s big and he might help lure his brother back to Pgh. Either way, a guy worth taking a flier on, IMO.

What the heck, if TB can hire Greg Malone to sign his son…

  40. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jul 2, 08:40 AM

Brd, the scoring depth in the system at this point isn’t great. Caputi has a very high upside, and Dustin Jeffrey looks like he could pan out as well — though both are young and far from locks. The reassurance you are looking for is that the Penguins have two superstar centers age 21 or younger, and a shutdown center age 19. Generally, these players would be playing in the minor leagues at such a young age — but their talents have put them in the NHL. So, the lack of scoring depth in the system frankly is a result of the talent int he NHL. I wouldn’t get into panic mode anytime soon, as Shero is proving to be a craft drafter, and it is my belief that, before long, the Baby Pens will have a nice selection of prospects.

Pens, I have mixed feelings about Godard. I definitely agree that the money used on him could/should have went to Adam Hall. Then again, while Hall was good for the Pens, is he, essentially, a dime a dozen player. Remember, he was signed to a tryout contract last summer. For his role, Godard is making an appropriate amount of money. I see him logging 3-4 minutes per game, but being scratched for about 40 games or so. Justin Maffei and I discussed this last night and I mentioned to him that, if Shero can put together a legit first line, Therrien might not be as inclined to role four lines, as he might want his big guns — especially if capable of playing a two-way game — to see more ice time.

Even so, depth signings for near league minimum certainly aren’t horrible — though I definitely see where the frustration comes into play with regards to Hall.

As for Marcel Hossa, I know little about him. Would he be a fourth line kind of guy or a big winger for the first line? I have to be honest when i say the idea has crossed my mind as well.

  41. Pens1967

    Jul 2, 09:09 AM

Matt, I don’t know anything about Marcel Hossa either, although I think Justin or Jesse thought he was worth the chance. He’s a big kid physically – 6’3” 220lbs and a LW so he might be a replacement for Malone with Malkin. He must have some talent to have been a first round draft choice and Therrien seems to the kind of coach who can get underachievers to play to their potential. OTOH, the Rangers got rid of him and Phoenix let him walk as an RFA. Maybe if his brother signs with the Pens, that would be extra motivation for him, too.

As for the 4 lines, I think this really is Therrien’s philosophy. Remember he learned from Lemaire and has cited him as one of his coaching role models. It’s my 20 guys are better than your 20 guys overall and I can wear you down and win in the 3rd period. We can’t argue with the success he’s had with that strategy either.

I really don’t like the Eaton signing, but I think it was done more as insurance for next year rather than this one. I’d guess
neither Sydor nor Gill are in the plans after this year.

The Pens have 7 defensemen now, not including Orpik, whom the Pens still want to re-sign. Something would seem to have to give here. I still believe Whitney is part of the core and won’t be traded, but I wonder if Shero will dangle Goligoski to a team that needs a puck-moving d-man for a forward?

  42. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jul 2, 10:15 AM

If Orpik signs, I could see Whitney traded, in all honesty. I know I’ve taken a hard stance that is just the opposite of this, but his value could be extremely high at this point (considering what other lesser defenders have received) and he might fetch a top-line winger.

With that being said, I still am not even ready to predict this, as it’s a big if with regards to Orpik. But your Goligoski scenario works as well — and may be more logical.

  43. TIM

    Jul 2, 01:46 PM

I don’t believe it. I can’t believe Hossa took a one year deal. God I hate the Red Wings

  44. Pens1967

    Jul 2, 02:21 PM

On the bright side, this leaves plenty of money to cover Malkin’s extention, which is official, btw, Fleury, Staal, Talbot, Kennedy and Orpik plus cap space for next year. Maybe the Pens will sign someone like Jagr or maybe they’ll just go with another really young team.

  45. The One and Only Surge

    Jul 2, 02:57 PM

All I can say is apparently money is the issue no matter what players say. I do understand he left for another contender but he said he was happy in Pgh and apparently that meant nothing. This also puts alot of pressure on Shero, because now the Jagr trade to Washington seems to be nothing compared to what the Pens gave to get Hossa.

Huge loss considering who is left to play with Sid.

  46. Pens1967

    Jul 2, 03:16 PM

Should Shero tender an offer sheet to Filppula, who is still unsigned? The Wings are 2.5M under the cap now. Filppula made 850k last year, so perhaps a two year deal at 2.6M would cause them a problem and only cost the Pens a 2nd round choice.

I’d do it. You’d get a good player for the same cost as a Laraque or Ruutu and get to p—-k the Wings, too. :)

  47. The One and Only Surge

    Jul 2, 03:36 PM

Not a bad option considering Ruutu is now gone as well. Shero is doing a horrible job. I understand the importance on the core but you still need more than just bodies in the other positions. Federov, Naslund, Jagr are all still available, I would think one of those has to come to Pgh for Shero to save face.

  48. Brandon

    Jul 2, 03:37 PM

It seems that Shero could be attempting to play a new kind of managing game. It seems from his activity thus far that he is going to attempt to build the team from the inside. This could mean that he is hoping to win AND still get good draft picks to attain young talent. Its a risky attempt, we’ll see how it works out.

Not to mention Crosby still did amazing with a seemingly ever changing line in the beginning of the year. Everyone says that a great hockey player makes everyone he plays with look better. Crosby could easily make Talbot, Staal, Dupuis, etc. look much much better. If he can do it for Armstrong, he can do it with the talent we have now. If Malkin can step up and do the same thing, it should still make for a killer team.

  49. The One and Only Surge

    Jul 2, 03:41 PM

The problem with that is you can make a player look better but you can’t make them a star. In other words, Hossa and Sid made Dupuis look good at times but you still saw he could not play as a first line winger. Talbot could fit that role but you need a Hossa type player to finish or even setup Sid.

All I can really say about all this is, yard sale, who wants what.

    Jul 2, 03:44 PM

After reading the RFA compensation clause, the compensation is based on the total salary divided by the number of years offered or 5, whichever is left.

So, the Pens could offer Filppula a nice 500k raise to 1.3M/yr for 3 year total of 3.9M. You’d put Detroit in an over the cap situation if they opted to match and only cost yourself a 3rd round choice, of which the Pens have two.

Matt, I think you forgot Ben Lovejoy on defense.

Just to change the subject a little, who, in addition to Gonchar, will get the “A“s on their sweaters this year now that Malone and Roberts are gone and Sydor may be before the season?

IMHO, Orpik and Talbot would be my picks. Maybe throw Whitney and Sykora in the mix too. Malkin should be at the top of the list, but maybe his ESL skills aren’t quite good enough yet.

  53. Brian

    Jul 3, 04:05 PM

I could definately see Tal-Bot 5000 getting an A and probably Sykora too, but who knows maybe one of these old boys (jagr, naslund) will come over and try to reclaim an A…just a thought.

1250 replayed part of Shero’s press conference. One of the questions was about Staal moving to wing. Shero said that it was something they’d talk to him about, but that the decision would be made by the coaches. Shero also mentioned Malkin might also play a little wing, too, but I got the impression that putting Staal back at wing is under serious consideration.

Tags was on 1250 tonight and he believes a team today absolutely needs 3 strong lines, but I think a 3rd line with Talbot, Kennedy and Dupuis could be very effective. All those guys can fly and they play at 1000 rpms every shift.

  55. Bobby

    Jul 3, 09:29 PM

67, agree completely on the 3rd line. Then move Stone up for 4th line and either sign one more LW or check out prospects and training camp invites for motivation.

  56. Pens1967

    Jul 3, 09:50 PM

I could actually see Bissonette making the big club as a 4th liner. He’s got some skill and is in the process of reinventing himself as a tough guy/enforcer. On those nights when Therrien doesn’t want to risk playing Godard, Bissonette would be a more skilled version.

Maybe they’ll still re-sign Jeff Taffe, too.

  57. Justin Maffei

    Jul 3, 10:38 PM

Pens, the only problem with that is that Bissonette is a D-man. It is possible but probably a long shot.

We even let__Conklin__leave! .. to the Red Wings, no less! To have Dany Sabourin as a backup is just totally inadequate. He flat-out stinks. We needed to sign Conklin as the backup. maybe it just me..
Shero said on a pressconference that they will lay low for a while….

    Well…......

    Hope thats false …!

Pens need to sign Matt Cooke!

Make a trade with Lightning …
hopefully in that trade get a centerman or
    a winger.

Rumors are that Lightning are interested in …Scuderi/Sydor….

  61. Pens1967

    Jul 4, 05:54 AM

The Pens are pretty close to the cap right now which is why Shero said that.

I doubt TB is looking for a d-man since they are trying to trade Boyle. They might take Sydor, but Therrien and the coaches love Scuds so unlikely he’d be traded plus his contract is only 750k.

The Pens don’t need Conklin. Sabu is signed through next season relatively cheaply, so it makes sense to keep him. I would like to see another goalie signed to play down in WBS with some NHL experience in case the injury/inconsistent bug hits MAF and Sabu.

I agree that this team needs a little sandpaper before training camp.

To even suggest Bissonette would be consideration for the big club a couple years ago would have been absurd. He did nothing in Wheeling to even suggest he was ready for Wilkes Barre. Fortunately for him, he had a complete turnaround and is finally living up to his potential. He made the ECHL all star team last year and has found a home it appears at wing. I have seen a lot of his games in Wheeling and he may be the best story to come out of Wheeling and believe me, there have been a lot of guys suit up in the NHL who played here. Good for him and I hope he makes it.

Actually Tom, according to Mike Vukovcan, who writes a blog for KDKA, the Penguins have $2,979,933 left prior to signing Pesonen. It can be found here: http://pod08.prospero.com/n/blogs/blog.aspx?webtag=kdka_sports

Also, I have not seen it that Pesonen was officially signed. Right now there are just reports of it.

The ever vigilant poster at LGP from this tidbit from Christodero, TB’s beat reporter:
    ————-

Lightning owner Oren Koules said the Lightning is not done trading this summer for both bodies and draft choices. Who is next to go? Well, Koules wouldn’t say. But we can make some educated guesses.

Given the stocking up that has gone on it at forward, it seems there are some extras up front that are good candidates. The most notable probably is Jussi Jokinen. The left wing was inconsistent in his time in Tampa after being acquired from the Stars in the Brad Richards trade. And he just doesn’t seem to fit right now.

With Marty St. Louis and Vinny Prospal playing with center Vinny Leecavalier; Ryan Malone and Radim Vrbata with center Steve Stamkos; Gary Roberts and, for now, Michel Ouellet with center Jeff Halpern; and perhaps Nick Tarnasky and Evgeny Artyukhin, when he is signed, with center Ryan Craig, Jokinen seems left out. Ouellet shouldn’t get too comfortable either, though his fine play with Halpern last season should mean Tampa Bay can be more choosy when working on deals.

What does Tampa Bay need? Another defenseman; not necessarily a star, but a 15- to 17-minute lockdown guy, a veteran who can add some stability to what will be a young blue line.

Will it happen right away? Not necessarily. But don’t blink. The way things have been going this summer, you might miss it.

    ——————

The “15-17” minute defenseman might be a good description of Darryl Sydor. Since TB’s d-men are all pretty young, Sydor would probably be a good mentor to them.
It mentions Joniken and Oulette possibly being the odd men out. Personally, I would not mind seeing perhaps a swap of Oulette for Sydor. Oulette is the responsible, grinder type player teams need and he already knows Therrien’s system and the coach likes him.

    Jul 5, 04:25 PM

Justin, I saw the $2,979,933* figure from two sources; however, if you do the math as I have, I believe that the remaining cap space is $3,856,000* as indicated by the computations in my comment. Neither The Pens Blog nor KDKA published their computations. Either way, the Pens have little cap space left and will have less if they sign Pesonen even if he signs an average entry level two way contract. The Pens have now signed 21 players if one counts Pesonen and will need two more to fill out their roster. I think it likely that they will sign Taffe and a baby Pen. Crosby’s line will need a net crasher (Caputi, Jeffrey, CPZ). The Pens also need a faceoff man (Jeffrey) to replace Hall. Brent, Stone, Smith, Goligoski and Curry are also waiting.

*These figures include eight defensemen. If the Pens can rid themselves of Sydor’s and Whitney’s cap hits ($6,500,000) they could shop a bit more. Right now it would seem that our depth chart is:

    Forwards:

    Staal, Crosby, Satan
    Fedotenko, Malkin, Sykora
    Dupuis, Talbot, Kennedy
    Caputi, Jeffrey, Taffe (UFA)
    Godard, Pesonen, CPZ
    Stone(RFA), Smith, Brent(RFA)

    Defensemen:

    Gonchar, Orpik
    Gill, Letang
    Eaton, Whitney
    Scuderi, Sydor
    Goligowski

    Goalies:

    Fleury
    Sabourin
    Curry

I should expect that the Pens will complete their roster, under cap, with 23 of these players. It has been suggested that Letang, with his blazing speed, pinpoint passing ability, vision and shooting ability as well as his gritty toughness could play wing, at least on the PP. One now former Pen referred to him as the best left wing on the team. I find him too valuable on the blue line to move him; however, he is young (21) and may do some double duty.

  71. Pens1967

    Jul 6, 08:36 AM

Tom, NHLnumbers and HockeyBuzz cap space section are the best sources for salary cap info. They are in spreadsheet format. The cap number and salary totals can be and are different, even in the same year.

NHLnumbers has the Pens at 2.639M of room which includes Cooke. Pesonen will be signing an entry level two-way contract as mandated by the CBA. His contract will likely take the Pens to about 2M under.

The contracts for minor leaguers won’t count against the Pens NHL cap unless or until they make the big club. Shero will start filling in those pieces over the next few weeks.

Shero is quoted in today’s P-G that he’s done with signings for now. They will invite players to training camp and the roster will shake out from there.

BTW, the Pens aren’t going to trade Whitney as Shero himself said during his press conference annoucing the Fedotentko and Satan signings. They aren’t going to move him to wing either. Goligoski won’t be playing in Pittsburgh until he gets better defensively and much stronger. In fact, he might be a candidate to be traded given the number of defensement the Pens have in the pipeline behind him. I’m sure the Pens are looking at ways to move Sydor
as he looks to be one of the odd men out and give him a chance to play regularly on a team that wants and can use him.

  72. Justin Maffei

    Jul 6, 12:50 PM

As Pens just said, Shero has said that he is done with signings. However, I do not think he should be. Staal, Cooke, Dupuis, and Talbot are the only really legitimate penalty killers. The Pens would be much better if they would sign someone like Michael Peca. He is a right handed faceoff specialist. He is also very good on the PK. His salary for last season was $1.315 million, so he could be signed for a decent price. Adding Peca would allow this line-up:

    Fedotenko – Crosby – Satan
    Staal – Malkin – Sykora
    Dupuis – Talbot – Kennedy
    Cooke – Peca – Godard

  73. Justin Maffei

    Jul 6, 12:58 PM

I just also wanted to add that if Pesonen is signed, he might be able to produce. I only know what I’ve read about Pesonen so like Matt Bodenschatz, I’m not really sure if he’s NHL-ready. If he is, where does he fit in? Is he ready for a top six role? Could he play an energy role a la Maxime Talbot or Tyler Kennedy? Once we get some of these answers we can be a little more knowledgeable about the lineup.

  74. Tom

    Jul 6, 03:19 PM

PENS1967, The salary cap figure I quoted was based on my own calculations relying upon the official cap hit of each player subtracted from the cap of $56,700,000 and ought to be accurate. My total cap space remaining of $3,856,000 was made before the signing of Matt Cooke for $1,200,000. Thus, the cap space remaining is $2,656,000, pretty close to the figure you quoted of $2,639,000, and far different from KDKA’s pre-Cooke figure of $2,979,933 (now $1,779,933 when reduced by Cooke’s contract). At any rate, regardless of the small change, the Pens must rid themselves of Sydor’s $2,500,000 of cap hit if they are going to obtain another scoring forward. When they sign Pesonen or Taffe or bring up Stone, Caputi or Jeffrey, their salaries will also count against the cap.

As to Peca, while he may be helpful, I would just as soon see Jeffrey and Caputi make the team and play. They are among the Pens future forwards. Fedotenko, Satan and Cooke are sufficient stop-gap players. I should suggest a fourth line of Caputi, Jeffrey and Cooke, leaving Godard and Taffe or Stone for spot play. Regardless of Shero’s protestations concerning Whitney, I fear that the Pens will become increasingly hampered by his emormous cap hit of $4,000,000 for the next six years when his defensive play does not justify the expenditure. He will become a white elephant unless he significantly elevates his game.

  75. The One and Only Surge

    Jul 7, 10:29 AM

Pesonen signs, is this official? Last I had heard, late last week, Shero stated that they where engaged in talks but no contract had been signed. I also, have not seen it on any other site as being official.

  76. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jul 7, 12:08 PM

Pesonen is up in the air. Roberts out of Finland suggest he is signed, while there is no official report from the team. I suppose this is a bit premature to have him on the depth chart, but I see no harm, considering he is considered a non-NHL player who will compete for a spot.

With that being said, regardless of his status at this point, I fully expect him to be at training camp this fall.

  77. Phil

    Jul 7, 01:03 PM

Pesonen will have to sign a 1-year, 2-way deal because of his age, and to come here he’d have to be inserted on the top 3 lines, and if he struggles then drop him to the AHL to get his swagger back. He’s not going to leave Sweden where he’s a star to come here and suffer on the fourth line. At least in the AHL the level of play would (theoretically) would be higher than the SEL. I’m looking forward to it. I hear about some of these kids from time to time, and Pesonen, Leino, Brunnstrom, etc. all caught my attention. We shall see…

Would still love to see a top line wing to play with Sid…But this team has been nicely put back together by Shero..

  79. The One and Only Surge

    Jul 8, 12:14 AM

I think this team has a lot of potential but some questions remain. Satan has been said to be a little unmotivated but playing with Sid could change that in a heart beat. Peasonen is questionable as to whether he is NHL ready or not but again, playing with Sid could be perfect for him. Size is not that important when you have a lot of skill. Look at St Louis and Theorn Fleury (not sure on spelling) both turned out to have good NHL careers and St Louis is still pretty young. The next question, who plays as the top six. I think Stall needs to get into the offense a little more or he may be looking for a new home come July 09. Not saying Shero would want to see him go but I think Stall would have to be unhappy with a third line center job and the pay that comes with it. All I can say is, I can’t wait till training camp.

    hi!

Suggestion on depth forwards meaning 2 way contracts…

Winger :Joakim Lindstrom from Columbus and my hometown in Sweden.

    Winger/Centerman:Jeff Hamilton from Carolina Hurricanes.

Winger: Lauri Tukonen Los Angeles Kings.
Kings doesnt give Lauri a chance and maybe he can get it here, say try out contract?

well i must say in sweden the site svenskafans.com seem convinced we are the free season loosers….

    Well i think mot quuite
Sure Hossa was a big loss , Malone well lets see how he does without MALKIN?
Ruutu vs Cooke Cooke wins in my eyes.
SATAN IS USELESS ACCORDING TI THIS SITE.
well i disagree and i think will show those experts ….
Fedotenko is crap also according to svenskafans.com well if u way Malone and
Fedotenko MAlone had one great season ,read last season ,sesaon 06-07 was also ok the other 2 was so and so.

Fedotenko did 33 points was -9 last season in one of the worst team in NHL.
ANd he did it in only 67 matches compared to Malone 44 points was -20 or so in 82 matches.

and dont thinl SATAN AND FEDOTENKO ARE SO BAD PLAYERS THEY WILL AT LEAST REPLACE MALONES pointsd with ease at least Satan will playing with Sid or Geno.

Sure Malone has developed but still has to stand on his own feet ….
It will interesting to seem him in lightning and i predict (if healthy)he have 40-45 points (82)22 goals 23 assists at the most.
i think Satan will have (if healthy)
    34 goals 33 assists(82)=67 points and
    Fedotenko 18 goals 22 assists(82)=40 points
    Cooke 11 goals 19 assists(82)=30 points
    Pesonen 14 goals 16 assists(62)=30 points
    Hamilton/Taffe/Stone/? 10 goals 15 assists
    Godard 3 goals 5 assists(50)=8 points
thats my take on this matter….
    =))

Henke, the big thing about Satan is that WANTS to play for the Pens. That suggests he will be very motivated next season. Just like playing with Malkin has revived Sykora, who said in a post-season interview he felt like he was “21 again”, playing with Crosby should help reinvigorate Satan.

  83. The One and Only Surge

    Jul 8, 09:59 AM

I seriously think Satan was not happy in NY but now being in a place he wants to be, he should produce.

    Jul 8, 10:34 AM

    Great discussion, everyone.

Henke, I think the site you read is way off, which you pointed out. The Pens may have lost a few important players, but they were able to replace them with lesser, yet still skilled, players. That’s what happens when a team has superstars making big bucks.

Pens and Surge, excellent points about Satan. He’s a very, very talented player who, as mentioned, seemed unhappy in New York. I could see him netting 35 goals and 80 points on Crosby’s wing, depending who is on the other side.

sorry for my speliing last time !
Will make this shorter i think it will be better…

Rumors about Chicago wants a trade that gives them Whitney, well alright i just dont see what black hawks can give us back?
I mean Kane or Toews are not going to be in any trade so?
I think they wants us to get Havlat.
But i say NO Thank U way to fragile !

    This “Shanny” rumors ….
    Any truth in them?
can he keep up with our speedy guys …
    doubt it…
Do we want Shanny here ?
    iam not sure…

    Teemu S. to pens ?
dont think so ,just a real week rumor!

  86. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jul 8, 11:09 AM

Henke, there was talk between the Pens and Hawks, but it ended there. Whitney is not on the trading block, and this was all but confirmed by management last week.

As for Shanahan, all I’ve heard is that he contact the Penguins and they had minimal — if any — interest. Truthfully, I think he has little value other than as a fourth liner with power play time. He’s slow, and as you questioned, I doubt he can keep up on the top lines — which is why he spent a nice chunk of the playoffs on the fourth line in New York.

Selanne: no. It’s Ducks or retire.

  87. The One and Only Surge

    Jul 8, 12:08 PM

I know its not going to happen but I would love to see Selanne here. He is such a smart player and still maintains a finnishing touch. Ofcourse it won’t happen: one he would cost more than we could afford at this point, two there is no free spot for him on the top two lines and last he won’t want to come here.

  88. Pens1967

    Jul 8, 12:20 PM

Before Sykora got here, the Pens were really missing forwards who would shoot the puck early and often. Now they have two, Sykora and Satan, who will shoot from anywhere and get most of their shots on net. Plus both are snipers and if they get an open look, the pucks going to be in the back of the net.

  89. Eric Politowski

    Jul 8, 10:26 PM

Also in the Pens system (AHL contracts):

    LW Ned Havern (FA)
    RW Kyle Rank (FA)
    G Kris Westblom
    F Casey Pierro-Zabotel

  90. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jul 8, 10:45 PM

Eric, we’re going with two-way contract players in addition to “prospects.” Of those you mention, I suppose Pierro-Zabotel is a prospect, but in the strictest sense of the word, as the organization didn’t feel he was worthy enough of a two-way deal.

  91. henkegbgskea

    Jul 9, 07:25 AM

    sorry guys….
bad weather and vacations week, typical …

I was just thinking a little… maybe way off so i want to “hear” with u guys/girls…

    Suggestion:
Last 2 signings Taffe and Jason Williams
    Taffe we know…
Willliams played with Chicago He has offensive skills ,can use him in PP.
    he played 43 games had: 13goals 23 assits=36P. -2 rating.Not the quickest skater or grittiest player…
but even so i rather have Jason W. then old “Shanny”?
Hes right handed and earned “only” 1,6 millon dollars last season.

A line up like this maybe

Sydor waiwed or traded to Altanta or Tampa.

    Fleury Sabourin

    Orpik-Gonchar
    Eaton-Whitney
    Gill-Letang
    x: Scuderi,Goligoski

    Staal-Crosby-Satan
    Fedotenko-Malkin-Sykora
    Dupuis-Talbot-Cooke
    Williams-Brent/Taffe-Kennedy/Godard/or
    Pesonen.

    x: Taffe/Brent, Godard, Pesonen
after say 15-25 games in WBS i think
Janne P. is ready for NHL.

  92. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jul 9, 08:53 AM

Henke, I certainly have no problems bringing back Taffe, but at this point, I think he’s anything but a priority. He’s a good player, but really brings common traits. In other words, he’s a dime-a-dozen player. What makes him attractive is that he was here before and there would be no transition period, as he’s comfortable with the system.

As for Jason Williams, I was planning on doing a piece either today or tomorrow on the remaining free agents possibly worth looking into, and he’s one of them.

Two more quick points. First, waiving Sydor will help only if he is claimed. If not — even if sent to the minors — his $2.5 million salary will count against the cap. But I agree that, at this point, the next step is moving him. Second, teams carry no more than 23 players on the roster during a season, so several players you mentioned certainly will be in the minors. And, since Shero generally likes to carry a bare-bones roster, look for no more than one extra defender and one extra forward.

Sorry your vacation isn’t going as well as you’d like — at least weather-wise. I hope it turns around for you!

  93. The One and Only Surge

    Jul 9, 09:02 AM

I don’t think I would put Stall on the line with Sid. He has shown that he plays good with Malkin and not as good with Sid. Secondly, if Pesonen plays the way I think he will, you will most likely see him on the 1st line with Sid and Satan. Meaning Fedotenko drops to the third line. If Pesonen doesn’t perform, he will be in WBS not on the 4th line.

  94. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jul 9, 09:33 AM

Surge, it’s fun speculating where players will play and whatnot, but I think what it really shows is that we have no real ideas what will happen.

Staal could find himself anywhere from first or second line left wing to third line center. Fedotenko could be on any of the first three lines. Pesonen could be anywhere from first line left wing, to third line left wing, to the AHL or back to Europe. We just really won’t know until players get accustomed to one another in training camp.

But keep speculating, as it’s quite fun!

I think an even more important aspect about moving Staal to the 2nd line is more ice time for Max. The energy and skill he brings to the table should not be left on the 4th line.

I don’t think Pierro-Zabotel had gotten any kind of contract from the Pens yet. He was brought in on an ATO during the playoffs, but I can’t find any evidence that he was actually signed to any sort of contract.

I’m pretty sure he still has a year of WHL-eligibility remaining, so I don’t think the Pens feel they have to sign him to a contract right away – and thus, I don’t think we can take it as an indication of how the organization feels about him, either.

If anything, the fact that the Pens brought him in for an ATO during the Calder Cup playoffs indicates that they still think of him as a viable prospect, I would think.

Bobby, I totaly agree. Max is sometimes under used.

Matt, I also agree with that statement. There is a lot of speculation on that but that is the only thing that keeps the sanity during the wait for the new season. Then again speculating is what keeps most members of the media, up and running. If not for speculation, no one would care to listen to NHL Live or watch (drwaing a blank on the name) that show on NHL network. But as a fan its even funner to speculate, because you only see on ice performance. You don’t get to see many practices or talk to the players in person or for that matter the coaches.

CPZ isn’t on contract with the Penguins, he signed an ATO to get some time with WBS during the playoffs, but he didn’t play in a single game. He’ll play back in the WHL and then get a contract next summer.

Matt, While Fedotenko and Satan may well be able to replace Malone and Hossa offensively, neither are their equal defensively. The Pens’ defense relies upon the backcheck from forwards, something at which Hossa and Malone excelled. Instead of the neutral zone trap (1/2/2), they may need to use one of their offensively skilled defensemen in a left wing lock (2/3) defense with two forecheckers and three defensemen, e.g. Staal and Dupuis backed by Gill, Letang and Eaton or Cooke and Talbot backed by Orpik, Gonchar and Scuderi. The two forecheckers may prove more of a problem for the opponent’s exiting their defensive zone than one and the increase in defensive skill would also help. Unless Satan and Fedotenko excell defensively, the left wing lock seems to be a practical response to the Pens’ personnel. Whitney/Sydor/Goligoski, who ever is dressed can relieve the defensemen and Kennedy, Malkin and Crosby can relieve the forecheckers. Quite a formidable defense/trap.

Just a quick note: Bill Thomas is a Right Wing, so assuming the report of his signing is correct, he should probably be placed in the Right Wing depth chart ;)

Actually, now that I look a little more closely, I’ll also point out that Connor James is also a Right Wing. Sorry to nitpick…

Ben, One certainly hopes that Thomas has a two way contract. After all, he couldn’t stick with Phoenix.

Shouldn’t this be 22 players on the depth chart? It says 20 at the top but I’m counting 22.

Any news on the Pens potentially re-signing Jeff Taffe? He seemed like he played well last year when he got the chance.

This was linked over at LGP, but it’s a pretty interesting Q&A with Ryan Malone.

    http://lightning.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=368207

The best part is when he’s asked about Sydor. Says Sydor loved TB, the area, etc, and that Sydor could help TB’s yound d-men. Sounds like a potential deal to me!

Also said he wants a chance to win a Cup. I guess he didn’t have that in Pgh…

  109. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jul 16, 08:42 AM

Pens, thanks for the heads-up on that. I actually read it and was planning to write a piece quoting it here and there, essentially discussing how Malone really was just chasing the money, and nothing else. I hope to get around to it this morning.

  110. Pens1967

    Jul 18, 11:06 AM

Bill Thomas was on 1250 this morning. He was asked why he chose the Pens and said that Ana, Ott and Pgh were interested in him. He said the Pens were the most aggressive in trying to sign him. He described his game as as being a “speedy winger” with the ability to score goals. He also said the Phoenix coaches were trying to get him to be more physical and he’s been working on that aspect of his game.

I know he’s got a 2 way contract, but I got the impression he will get a fair shot at making the team. It should make for an interesting training game.

  111. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jul 18, 11:10 AM

Competition breeds success. He certainly has the right attitude, and the interest around the league indicates there may be more than meets the eye.

Looks like the Pens re-signed Jeff Taffe. A good move, IMHO. Taffe showed he could contribute at the NHL level.

  113. Ben Schmidt

    Jul 29, 03:57 PM

I wouldn’t put too much stock in the current web-roster for determining if a player should be considered NHL or not – going into Training Camp, Tim Brent was listed on the Penguins’ site as being on the NHL roster, after all.

  114. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jul 29, 04:01 PM

True, but I also think they traded for Brent hoping he would earn the fourth line center position. The same can be said for Pesonen, who clearly was signed for the NHL, not the AHL. Regardless, it’s a rough science, and I believe Pesonen will make the team.

  115. Ben Schmidt

    Jul 29, 06:39 PM

That’s certainly true. I’m hoping Pesonen makes the team as well – if he does, that means he was able to translate his game to the NHL, and if he can do that, he’s fast, has good hands, and knows where to go to score goals. He seems like he’d be, at the very least, an upgrade over Dupuis on Crosby’s left wing.

  116. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jul 29, 10:11 PM

Ben, that’s the way I look at it as well. He clearly has speed and a good shot — but is his elusiveness in Europe because of big rinks or because he has a knack for knowing how to find open spaces? If it’s the first, he’s not going to last — but if it’s the second, there’s absolutely no way he would be worse than Dupuis.

I think Pesonen’s status also depends on Fedotenko and Staal. If “Tank” comes in with something to prove, that leaves one spot on the top two lines. Maybe management wants Staal in a more prominent role. Maybe they don’t. If they do, that could mean Pesonen will have to really impress to get on the top line.

Basically what I am saying is that we have no idea. There are plenty of ifs and very few certainties at this point. And that’s why I can’t wait for camp!

  117. Rick Rammer

    Jul 30, 12:52 PM

Why don’t you list players who have been moved to new positions, which they played at with WBS last season? Stone – LW, Bissonette – LW, Gove – C (Gove has actually always been a center).

  118. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jul 30, 02:14 PM

Rick, valid question. Depth charts are so fluid that they vary not only from publication to publication, but from coach to coach within the same organization.

I will flip flop Stone and Gove, but Bissonnette has spent a very small portion of his career at left wing, so for now, he’ll remain a defenseman on FF’s depth chart.
