Hossa Hasn't Rejected Contract

A reported seven-year, $35 million contract is on the table in Pittsburgh for forward Marian Hossa, and according to Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Hossa has not rejected it.

“...the Penguins have been tenacious about trying to get his name on a new contract before the free-agent market opens for business today at noon, which is why it’s still not out of the question that he will stay on their depth chart.”

Molinari added that, before general manager Ray Shero potentially inks a replacement, he very well might contact Hossa and give him one last option to take the offer.

Regarding defenseman Brooks Orpik, Molinari wrote that his situation remains unclear and that there are no indications as to what might happen, though he believes Orpik could make significantly more on the free agent market than Shero would be willing to offer.

Lastly, Molinari wrote that Shero has “laid the groundwork” to keep Jarkko Ruutu, Pascal Dupuis and Adam Hall, among others, “if circumstances allow it.”

While the offseason has been relatively unproductive at this point — at least in terms of players signed by the Penguins — I think today could mark a stark contrast, with several roster moves potentially happening before nightfall.

Sit back and enjoy, and remember to keep with Faceoff Factor throughout day, as Michael Farkas will LiveBlog all of the signings and trades beginning at noon.

I posited this on the Depth Chart item, but
I think it’s entirely possible that the delay in Hossa signing has much more to do with helping Winter save face than Hossa not wanting to sign. This is speculation of course, but I could see Hossa telling Winter that he wants to (or will) sign with the Pens, but that out of respect for Winter will wait until today so that Winter can claim he got the best offers and Hossa just preferred the whole situation in Pgh better.

It just strikes me as so odd that Shero hasn’t traded his rights and there’s so little mention of Hossa’s name in all the rumors out there.
