Jesse Marshall | Pittsburgh Penguins
Jul 18, 04:18 PM | Hype this story!
The Penguins announced today that head coach Michel Therrien has been extended three years.
Therrien, fresh off the Stanley Cup final, boasts a 94-51-19 record with the Penguins in the regular season and is 15-10 in the playoffs.
Therrien, although already under contract for next year, will receive in increase in salary for next season, a generous gesture by GM Ray Shero.
While pleased with the signing and the direction the team is headed, Therrien added that the team has yet to achieve what they set out to do.
“We still have a lot of work to do, though, because we fell short of our biggest goal last season. Our goal is, and always will be, to win the Stanley Cup.”

Kudos to Shero for taking a huge leap of faith. In a league where coaches are hired just so they can be fired, Shero has committed to his coach for what will end up being a minimum of five and one half years. Great signing! And, might I say, another “core” piece of the puzzle retained?

actually, Jesse, he’s 108-80-27 wit’ de Pens; much as most of us would like to, we can’t forget 2005-06. (and hey, it pushes him ahead of Scotty Bowman. ;)
(and it’s not an extension, it’s simply a new contract worth more, for three seasons, that supersedes the last year of his old one.)
Félicitations et bonne chance pour la nouvelle saison, MT!!!!!

Therrien on 1250 with Laird and Colony…
very excited to keep working with team …good vote of confidence…laughed about being called “Shero’s guy”...appreciates the opportunity Shero gave him…says there’s still a lot of work to be done…young core players are still a challenge to work with and improve…praised Shero for signing the core of young players…contract dealing was friendly and professional…wants to be in Pgh…loves it here and playing in front of enthusiastic fans.
On to Hossa…“you don’t want to know” his reaction…it was business decision…they
will move one…fans will love Matt Cooke.
On being “hated”...never heard comments from players they don’t like him…bottom line is as a coach to make the players play their best…they know he’s got their back at all times…some players need a pat on the back, some a serious meeting… players know he’s trying to get the most/best out of them.
Satan/Fedo…top six, but will experiment a lot in training camp…has ideas about them, but performance in camp will dictate what happens.
Important to have depth in defensemen…
nothing bad to say about anyone.
On Staal…might be winger or shutdown center…will do what he thinks will games.
On Crosby/Malkin on PK…it’s a process…
one step as a time…will probably see more PK time…thinks they are ready, but wants to see how they react.
