According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar has not yet undergone an MRI to determine how severe the damage to his left shoulder is.

An MRI originally was planned for Sunday, but was put off until later this week after Gonchar met with team physician Dr. Charles Burke.

In a PG story originally published yesterday, Dave Molinari wrote the following:

“Although Penguins officials seem resigned to Sergei Gonchar’s left-shoulder injury forcing him from the lineup for an extended period — one measured in weeks, not days — there still is no official word on its precise nature or severity.”

The injury was suffered Saturday night when Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman David Koci, fighting for a roster spot, took himself out of the play to make a late, yet clean, hit on Gonchar.

Gonchar immediately favored his left arm and, after remaining on the bench for several minutes, left the game for good.

Eric Godard eventually fought Koci, though several Penguins players confirmed their belief that the hit was clean.

If I was a Flyers fan (and thank God I’m not) I would be really upset if Koci doesn’t get a suspension for the hit on Gonchar.
