Gonchar Out Indefinitely, Says GM Shero

With just two preseason games behind us, the Pittsburgh Penguins already are without two key contributors on the blueline.
Ryan Whitney is sitting out while he recovers from foot surgery, and Sergei Gonchar left Saturday’s preseason opener favoring his left shoulder.
Today, team officials released a statement regarding Gonchar, and it wasn’t good.
The offensive defenseman suffered a dislocated shoulder as a result of a late hit by Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman David Koci, and will be out for an indefinite amount of time.
“Sergei will continue to be evaluated as our team medical personnel consider several treatment options,” Shero said. “In the meantime, we will look for our other defensemen to step up and fill the void created by his absence.”
At this point, the Penguins have six NHL defensemen — Brooks Orpik, Kris Letang, Hal Gil, Rob Scuderi, Mark Eaton, and Darryl Sydor — and two defensive prospects — Alex Goligoski and Danny Richmond — remaining in camp.
Don’t be surprised if all eight remain on the roster when the Penguins make their final cuts and head to Europe for the start of the 2008-09 season.

Well, I hate to see Gonch out, but we can see how Gogo and Danny do given half a chance. I’ll be watching!
