Taffe Put On Waivers, Curry Sent To AHL

The Pittsburgh Penguins today placed forward Jeff Taffe on waivers and have re-assigned John Curry to their AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

If Taffe is not claimed by noon tomorrow, he will report to the AHL and play for the “Baby” Penguins.

The move is not surprising, as general manager Ray Shero likes to keep his roster trim, with one extra at forward and defense.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette also is reporting that tough-guy forward Paul Bissonnette, an unlikely choice to make the team just two weeks ago, has switched his number from the generically assigned 67 to his choice of 16.

Wow. I would not have expected Taffe to get waived and Bissonnette kept on the roster. I wonder if Taffe took his spot on the team for granted? Hopefully this he takes this as a kick in the pants to do better.

Ben, I am too, to an extent. Taffe, to me, always has been a nice fill-in player when injuries occur, but I’ve never considered him someone I would like as a regular on the fourth line — or, as some suggested, a regular on the third line. He’s got nice size, but doesn’t use it. He obviously has skill (evidenced by his status as a former first rounder), but rarely shows it. And he’s not a defensive presence or an energy player. He’s very bland — like a Triscuit or something.

Bissonnette, on the other hand, brings a physical, defensive game to the fourth line, though I am not sure he and Godard both should be regulars.

To be honest, I feel Thomas is a younger Taffe…very bland. He’s an okay player, but the Penguins need more energy, grit, defense, etc from their fourth liners.

It will be interesting to see how this develops.

Personally, I’m hoping to see a Bissonnette-Kennedy-Thomas line against the Devils this weekend (I was originally hoping for a Taffe-Kennedy-Thomas line, but obviously that won’t work). I’m hoping that Kennedy fires up his line the same way Talbot fires up his linemates, so they can at least get a good cycling/minute-chewing game going for that line. I don’t think the Pens really need a heavyweight against the Devils, so Thomas would make more sense than Godard in that game, anyway.

Of course, this assumes Sykora is back in game action, and nobody else is out for an injury by then…

Pens, when I was in college working my way to a Bachelors Degree in journalism, my professor had a way of grading our writings that was designed to embarrass you for your mistakes — basically to prepare you for the criticisms faced when writing for a daily newspaper.

So for each type of mistake, he had a name, and all your mistakes were typed into a weekly handout for the class.

One type of mistake was called “Melba Toast.” It was for story leads that were boring and didn’t grab the readers’ attention. They were bland, dry, dull. Nothing special about them.

The reason for this long, boring story: I changed Melba Toast to Triscuit because it is a bit more common — and I hate Triscuits — not that I hate Jeff Taffe.
