Summary
Call it a gutsy performance, a character win, the 2008-09 version of "the Ottawa game" — it doesn’t matter.  None of those descriptions would do tonight’s 7-6 overtime victory over the Detroit Red Wings any justice.

This is the sort of game that sets the tone for the season and that provides confidence, not only for individuals in himself (see Staal, Jordan), but for every player in every one of his teammates.

This is the type of game that previews future big games in, dare I say, the Stanley Cup Finals?  The Pittsburgh Penguins may be without Marian Hossa, Ryan Malone, and other significant contributors, but new stars have emerged, and this season looks to be every bit as bright as last season’s was.

So, without doing tonight’s unbelievable comeback victory any further injustice, let’s look at the stats and let them do the talking.

Matt I can’t wait to see the highlights from this. Mr.Jordan Staal is playing some solid hockey now. He had an amazing goal against NYI that brought on the surge, and now here he is dropping a hat trick on the best team in the league. Let’s Go Pens Matt! Let’s Go Pens!

This is how we jump up and down screaming in November.

Staal is a clutch performer. He stepped up his game big time in the playoffs last year, and he did so again tonight. Let’s hope his confidence continues, as he is unstoppable when confident.

Also, the last time the Red Wings gave up 7 or more goals? January of 2007, when they gave up 9 to the Sharks. The Wings don’t lose games, let alone blow huge leads and give up a plethora of goals. This win says a lot about the Penguins.

Yes indeed Bobby. Staal just looks, I don’t know if happier is the best word, but just more comfortable out there? He seems to be all over the ice. He had a nice pick pocket to set up that goal. If he plays up to his level you have 3 monster lines

Tim, and that last sentence is important: three lines, not two. Three.

Staal and Kennedy are proving some chemistry, and with Matt Cooke flanking their wing, that line is a high energy, defensive line that is more than capable of scoring. Moving Staal to the second line because he’s playing well is a bad idea. He’s found his role, let’s keep him there. The same goes for Kennedy.

Oh, and let’s not overlook Talbot’s production on the top line. He’s been great so far. He skates hard (like Dupuis), forechecks well (like Dupuis), and plays physical (more so than Dupuis), and has the skill to make a decent pass and convert some goals (much more so than Dupuis). Maybe he’s getting a burst from a promotion. But I tend to think Talbot is the perfect compliment for Sid and Satan.

These are the types of wins every good team needs. Games like this instill a “We can do it” type of attitude. I see this game being one that is used as a teaching tool for the rest of the year.

When was Staal’s other hat trick? I want to say it was in late Jan – early Feb of 2007 in a game against Toronto, in another high scoring game. Anyone else remember when he had his 1st?

P.S. The 3rd line played as well as any Penguins line has played this season. Staal was possessed out here.

How about Ziggy and that big faceoff win late in the game? He has contributed nicely to this team, and I hope he continues to win improtant faceoffs for us.

Well, Matt, if Therrien’s assignment of ice-time means anything, it would appear that Coach T agrees (at least for now, after all, nothing’s permanent).
    Talbot – 20:11
    Dupuis – 7:37

Guess who led the game in ice time? Crosby, Orpik, Malkin, Letang? Nope.
Alex a-Gogo with 28:12, a full 3:30 more than the next Pen, Crosby.

Funny, yous guys talking about the Pens having three lines. I was thinking that Staal should get a shot on Sid’s wing, haha. A skilled big body to go with the playmaker and the sniper. Eh, it’s Therrien, I’m sure they’ll get a shot at some time, sooner or later.

Bobby, I WAS jumping up and down and screaming. What a win. Jordan Staal was possessed, Malkin was a beast. Satan set up two nice goals. Talbot is inspired. Gogo was everywhere. Just a great team effort. My worry is Scuderi. What’t the scoop on him?

Eric, I believe the hat trick you are thinking of was on Saturday, February 10th(?), 2007 against the Leafs. I remember it because Don Cherry pulled him onto the HNIC set to talk to him after the game. He looked like a kid in a candy store.

Comment: Scuderi (foot) didn’t return to Tuesday’s game after taking a shot off of his left skate.

This is all I can see on the subject so far… hope he’s alright. He’s been great defensively, especially playing goaltender when ours is out of position.

If Staal can take the next step in his game, I don’t mean scoring HT’s every game. But if he can start to dominate with his size etc. This team can go from very good to elite pretty quickly…

    Nov 12, 10:55 AM

    Also…

Jordan Staal scored his second career hat trick (Feb. 10, 2007 at Toronto).

    There’s his first hat trick.

This is 10X what the Ottawa game was last year. I don’t think I have ever seen such a great reg season game. Looks like that goal against the Islanders gave Staal the confidence he needed to step up big when Crosby/Malkin didn’t – I’m not saying they did not play well, they were just over shadowed by Staal’s amazing performance.
A great all around team effort, I think everyone who they needed to have a good game did. Special teams were not great but they got the goal they needed on the 5 on 3. Without that they lose the game.
On the last play I don’t think Fedotenko is getting enough praise for burying that akward onetimer – amazing shot.
If Fedotenko and Staal can put up some numbers this team is going to get a lot better very quickly.

Thanks Ashley and Jon, I guess my memory was correct. I think Staal scored in OT that game in 3 on 3 play, crazy finish. That Toronto game reminded me a lot of the win last night. I typically don’t like high scoring affairs, but two of my favorite Penguins games in recent memory have been 10+ goal games.

Can’t say enough about the game. I was in row 1 of the corner to Osgood’s left in the 1st, 3rd and OT. I was disappointed when we got to the Joe because I thought our seats were in the corner to the right of the Pens bench. Well, I rescind that disappointment since I had an ice level view of Jordan working his butt off and the game winner. I took 1,057 photos and many turned out very well.

And I was very delighted that Max not only scored a goal ON my birthday (11-06) but also last night as I celebrated my birthday at the game!!!

I guess I was not totally delusional when I said Max would be good on the line with Sid. Max has no self-interest; he’s the perfect to compliment Sid and Miro.

I can’t wait until Feb. 8th when I get to travel TO Pittsburgh to see THAT game (and to see this beautiful city).

I like Talbot with Sid & Beezelbub as well. While he’s not a guy that you write in permanent ink on the first line for the next several years, he is a good complementary player. He’ll dig in the corners, play a responsible game, make a few plays and if he skates with Sid, score some goals. Bob Errey complimented Mario quite well for a few years before he had the likes of Stevens, Recchi, Tocchet, Jagr, etc on his flanks and I don’t see why Talbot can’t do the same for now.

As for the game, I can’t say any more than has already been said. Simply unbelievable…
