According to Pittsburgh Sports Insider via the LetsGoPens.com message boards, the Penguins have recalled goaltender John Curry from their AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Curry will serve as backup to Dany Sabourin tonight as Marc-Andre Fleury copes with what is believed to be a minor groin issue.

In eight games this season with the “Baby” Penguins, Curry has tallied a 3-4-0 record, a 3.36 goals-against average and a .897 save percentage.

The 24-year-old has not made an NHL appearance previously in his young career.

This is a little concerning. If Fleury is being held off for precaution, why would he not be in as the back up. Unless he is not being helf off to be safe but rather is injured to the point he can’t play. Might still be a minor injury but may also be a few games rather than one. In any case, as long as Sabu is healthy we should be fine.

Surge, a few games sounds reasonable, and, really, when you think about it, calling up Curry makes sense. When a skater is injured and unable to play — even if only minor — he isn’t placed on the fourth line, where he could simply ride the pine or play 5 minutes. He’s scratched. This very well could be the same type of scenario. Why put him on the bench and risk forcing him to play if Sabourin gets hurt as well?

It’s a long season and it is my belief that you take extra precautions with any potential nagging injuries early in the year, as they could become disruptive when the games count the most.

Since there is no report of Fleury going on IR, one can only assume that this move is insurance if Sabourin were to sustain an injury or have a real stinker of a game. Either way, Curry is probably (hopefully) only adding to his frequent-flier miles…
