| Summary |
| The rivalry between the Washington Capitals and the
Pittsburgh Penguins just continues to grow. Unfortunately for the Penguins, the Capitals now seem to have the upperhand, winning both matchups so far this season. Tonight was another hard-fought game for the Penguins, though they played a much less disciplined style of game than they did just 24 hours ago, both in terms of their system and careless penalties. More important than the loss on the scorecard is the loss of man power. Rob Scuderi (puck to the head), Max Talbot (wrist), and Sidney Crosby (lower body) all left the game with injuries and did not return. |

Is this rock bottom?
Or can we still go a bit lower?

Someone please ask “No Skill” Gill if he knows how to play defense, or if he thinks lying down on the ice everytime an east-west pass is made is playing defense.

First time hearing it, we have been using that one in D10 all season long.

Having been at the game, I’d like to get an explanation from the NHL front office as to how the officiating was acceptable: – Crosby got elbows the face multiple times. – Bissonnette was punched in the back of the head when he could not have possibly been able to do anything about it. – Gill got a stick to the face, and received a penalty for his troubles. – Fedorov put Crosby in a headlock, right in front of a ref, even though they weren’t in a scrum, and didn’t have the puck.
No calls on any of those. Well, except for the Gill incident. On that one, Gill got called for a penalty, which shows the refs were actually watching, they were just choosing to ignore what the Capitals were doing.
I wanted the Pens to stand up for themselves, but the refs established the standard very early on in the game: the Capitals would be allowed to get away with headhunting and mugging, but if the Pens tried to stick up for themselves, they’d get penalized. And that’s how the whole game went. It wore down the Pens. They just didn’t have any energy by the end of the game. I can’t think of anyone who would.

Just to add to Bens comments. Why is AO untouchable? AO flattened Sid up against the boards well after the puck was moved and no interference but Cooke skates up to AO and bumps him to say don’t do it again and all of a sudden bam interference on Cooke. Come on, if your going to fix games at least make it a little less obvious.

Ben, can’t anyone make the refs answerable to such blatant favoritism? Is there nothing anyone can do about this crap????

Well, certainly fans can’t. I suppose the team could try complaining to the League, but I suspect they won’t for fear of being labeled as whiners and complainers (see: reaction to Therrien pointing out the obstruction committed by the Red Wings during the Stanley Cup Finals). Plus, it clearly doesn’t do any good anyway.
Really, about the only thing they could have done last night is send Bissonnette and Godard out there to make sure the Caps knew that two can play that game. With the game so close for so much of the game, though, they didn’t think it was worth doing.
I do kind of wonder if it wouldn’t have helped the team morale a bit to let their enforcers do their jobs early, and then just go out and kill the penalties. I would think the team would be fired up to kill those penalties off, since it would be teammates sticking up for each other, and if they did it early in the game, they might be able to nip the whole headhunting thing in the bud, and be able to play on even terms the rest of the game.
That said, I think it’s an utter joke that this sort of mentality need exist, but until the League is willing to do something about its officials and their utter lack of consistency, it’s really the only option.

Well, if we know we’re losing then I guess we need to inflict some REAL pain!
