6. M. Briere (270)

1. Evgeni Malkin v. 4. Mark Recchi – Recchi is still finding success in Boston while Malkin leads the Art Ross race. Recchi has blazed a great trail. Has Geno already written over top of it?

2. Tom Barrasso v. 3. Randy Carlyle – Barrasso swept past his first round match while Carlyle struggled with Briere. Does he have what it takes to put one past Tommy B?

    I don’t know if I like Briere getting the nod here…76 games…12g 32a

Briere’s number was retired due to the tragic nature of his death, he was injured in a car accident and spent 11 months in a coma after his rookie season with the penguins.

Nobody wore 21 after that…since 1970…and his number was officially retired in 2001.

Guys, it’s becoming blatantly obvious that Malkin is running the table here, but lets not forget that, compared to Recchi or Barasso, who he will face in the next round, Malkin has yet to win a cup.

    Just saying.

@Ben, he’s also in his third season compared to the others, who played in the league for years. A Stanley Cup isn’t a sign of individual success, but rather team success. An individual can be great — and possibly the greatest — and not have a Stanley Cup.

The idea of this tournament is to allow everyone to set their own criteria and vote for the player(s) they feel best fits that criteria.

Carlyle was a great player in his own right (Norris winner with the Pens, right?), but despite Barrasso’s tumultuous time with the Pens, he was in the net for two Cups. ‘Nuff said…
