Summary
"Get in the fast lane Grandma, the bingo game’s ready to roll!"

Game notes…
  • Six goals against anyone is good.  Six goals against Martin Brodeur and the Devils is amazing.
  • Thirteen players (including Marc-Andre Fleury) with points, six players with goals, four players with multi-point efforts.  That’s the depth needed for the playoffs.
  • Two for five on the power play is a nice showing that just added to their improved all-around special teams play during this eight-game homestand.
  • Hal Gal and Rob Scuderi each with a plus-four rating tonight.  They’re back in 2008 playoff form.
  • Fleury notched his 33rd win of the season with yet another solid performance.

Games to watch, and who the Penguins need(ed) to win…

  • Atlanta 3, Buffalo 2
  • Toronto 3, Philadelphia 2

Not a bad night.  Penguins win and climb.  Sabres lose and fall further out of contention.  Flyers lose and slip into a tie with the Penguins.

    Good point over on EN

One factor I have NOT seen mentioned re: Malkin vs. Ovechkin for MVP is the quality of their respective SCHEDULES.

Malkin plays in the Atlantic — BY FAR the most competitive. It is very rare for a division to send 4 teams into the playoffs. Its only been done 7 times since the new format. The Atlantic will do it 3 years IN A ROW (assuming NJ, Pitt, Phil, and NYR all stay in the top 8, w/c seems likely).

Meanwhile, Ovechkin plays in the WEAKEST division with a maximum dose of games vs. Tampa Bay, Florida, and Atlanta.

If the Penguins played in that division they could be challenging for the #1 overall seed in the East. How many more points would Malkin have this year?

And if you stuck the Capitals in the Atlantic, you’d have to think Ovechkin’s #s would be down—>> enough to definitely knock him out of the Top 5 in the scoring race.

I am super surprised at the rapid decent of the Devils. They look dreadful. If I was a Devils fan I would be freaking out. Pens played an awesome game and pounded on a reeling team.

@Albert, I see your point but also don’t. I think players of their class will always rise to the occasion. If Ovie played in the Atlantic, then he would most likely play differently but still produce those points. Also, Washingtons record is best against Atlantic division teams. They actually play worst against the SE. So that definetly would go against your theory.

What’s the story with Fedotenko? Did he leave in the 3rd, or simply not return after the period break?

On the radio, Lange/Bourque said Fedo got hit by Holik and wasn’t able to return.

Marty Brodeur might be the winningest goalie of all time, but the Pens sure seem to have his number. IIRC, he’s started 61 games against the Pens and been pulled in 10 or them and certainly could have been pulled last night, too.
If I were NJ, the Pens are the one team I wouldn’t want to draw in the first round.

@PENS1967, I agree that NJ doesn’t want to play the Pens but I’m also certain that nobody wants to play the Hurricanes. Both teams are playing complete games right now. They are scoring 5v5, on the PP, and they are killing penalties quite well. Add the fact that both teams are getting exceptional goaltending. In order to beat either team you are going to need to step it up and that is not something all teams can do.

i grabbed that off the EN board from “Malkin for MVP”

is Ovechkin really held in check by the weak defenses of the SE? that doesn’t sound right.

in any event, i’d like to see what Malkin would do vs. the Lightning, Panthers, and Flames filling 22% of his schedule.
