The Penguins today announced the signing of Pittsburgh-native defenseman Nate Guenin to a one-year contract.
Guenin, 26, previously played within the Philadelphia Flyers organization and has 12 games of NHL experience.
In 62 games with the Philadelphia Phantoms of the AHL during the 2008-09 season, Guenin put up 14 assists and 95 penalty minutes.
He likely will serve as a veteran AHL presence to mentor incoming rookies Brian Strait and Alex Grant.

Hmm…I know nothing about this player. I hope he can find some chemistry with our guys.

I think Guenin is our 8th or 9th defenceman. The eventual signing Lovejoy and (hopefully) another defenceman will push him down.
An example of Shero’s desire for defensive depth, which is a good thing.

Bombulie likes ths signing, from his blog:
“I have to admit that I never understood why Nate Guenin only got 12 NHL games over the last three seasons. The Flyers were dressing the likes of Lasse Kukkonen, Rory Fitzpatrick, David Printz and Lars Jonsson while Guenin stayed with the Phantoms.
I don’t know if his road to the NHL is any easier in the Penguins organization, but to me, this is an excellent depth signing. Guenin is a big (6-2, 210) stay at home D with some snarl to his game. Hard to play against. If he was out of the lineup when the (WB/S) Penguins played the Phantoms, you could always tell the difference.”

Bombulie is also reporting that Jeff Taffe has signed with the Panthers. He was a solid citizen while here, good luck to him.

Minard to Edmonton, again, according to Bombulie.

@Dabich, I think most pretty much expected that. Guys like Taffe and Minard had spent a few years with the team only to get minimal NHL time. Both moved on to lesser teams with hopes of a better/easier path to the NHL.
Interestingly, the Baby Pens are going to be filled with a bunch of rookies and made up primarily of young players. The fans of the team are a bit worried, but JB pointed out that the best teams in Baby Pens history are the ones that used youngsters in prominent roles, while supplementing with a few veterans.
Should be a good/exciting for both the Baby Pens and the parent club!
