Zigomanis Apparently Re-Signs With Pens

Update

It appears forward Mike Zigomanis has not re-signed with the Penguins, after all.

The faceoff specialist’s name, which briefly appeared on the roster section of the Penguins’ website, no longer is listed, indicating that he remains a free agent.

We will have more on Zigomanis if needed.

Hat-tip to “SolidSnake” of the Let’s Go Pens message boards for putting together the following information:

Center Mike Zigomanis appeared to be out of the picture in Pittsburgh, as general manager Ray Shero passed him by for other fourth liners.

But, on what has turned into a busy day for the defending Stanley Cup Champions, it appears one more signing has been added to the list that already includes John Curry, Wade Brookbank, and Wyatt Smith.

Zigomanis, long absent from view on the roster section of the Penguins’ website, has reappeared, indicating that the faceoff specialist is back with the team.

To add additional fuel to the fire, his biography on the NHLPA website has him earning $650,000 with the Penguins during the 2009-10 season.

There is no official word on a signing, but these clues indicate an announcement is forthcoming.

Yay! Wow, is it just me or are we really stacking our roster with players? Maybe it’s just because out of nowhere this day has exploded with signings!

Now if we could get Gonchar and Letang signed for an extension I would feel better.

If true, I like it. Right handed centerman who can win draws is at a premium on this team…hope it’s true…

I don’t know how much weight we can put into this. I just looked up Alex Tanguay on the NHLPA site and it lists him with an 09-10 “compensation” of over $5 million with Montreal. Last I looked, Tanguay was still a free agent, and I doubt he signs that kind of contract with the Habs.

Now don’t get me wrong; I’ll happily take Ziggy back. And I can’t dispute he’s back on the Penguins roster. But I’ll wait before getting excited.

You shouldn’t take the compensation mentioned at NHLPA at face value. They tend to reuse previous information when there hasn’t been a formal announcement of contract terms. Zigomanis made $650,000 last year, so it’s probably another copy/paste job.

In short, he’s probably signed by the pens but don’t trust the compensation. The lack of interest on the market might have reduced Zigomanis’ contract demands and brought him back on Shero’s radar.

The trick is you can’t go all Tom crazy like he did with Mormina & Pesonen. Gotta be subtle, use the Jedi mind trick, “These aren’t the droids you’re looking for. We need a right-handed faceoff specialist.” Works every time.

Guys if you look at the Pens roster on NHLPA. It also says Geno is “unsigned” as well as others and says Boucher is making 2.5 mill next year.

I hope Pens.com is right, but they still have Ryan Stone and Vlad Malhnkeh listed as “prospects”.

According to NHLSourcesSay’s (AKA HendricksHockey) twitter account, Zigomanis signed a one year 650K deal with the Penguins. I don’t know their reliability though.

The only thing keeping me from adding him to my roster report is the fact that the Penguins nor any of the newspapers have reported it. I mean, they reported the signings of Brookbank and Smith — but not the re-signing of Zigomanis? Seems odd.

Just checked the roster on the Pens’ website…don’t see Ziggy’s name on it.

That’s too bad. I have no idea why Zigomanis didn’t re-sign with the Pens a few months ago, if they even offered him a contract. Not sure what type of contract demands he could have had…

At this point in the off season, Zigomanis will be lucky to get a one-way deal imo…

Generally, the NHLPA isn’t the best of sources when it comes to re-signings or current compensation (it’s actually something of a mess). Sometimes you can spot a new player added to a team roster, eg. Boynton with Anaheim, and make the conclusion of a signing. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the compensation mentioned is correct (See Johnson, Brent). So everything contract related at NHLPA needs to be treated with care and corroborated by other sources.

The various website rosters are usually not enough as corroboration given the infrequency of updates, but it was worth a shot and Zigomanis may indeed end up in Pittsburgh at some point. At least until he’s signed somewhere else.

@KG, Zigomanis is a nice player based on his faceoff abilities, but he doesn’t bring much speed, grit, or toughness that the Penguins clearly have been targeting in their signings this summer. And with Jordan Staal, Matt Cooke, Pascal Dupuis, and Craig Adams as the team’s penalty killers, Zigomanis likely would be an odd-man out there.

I certainly wouldn’t have a problem with re-signing him, but I don’t think he’s as important of a player as he’s been made out to be. There’s a reason he remains a free agent, and I’m sure, unlike several other players out there, it has nothing to do with his salary demands.

@Moq, what was interesting to me about this was that I distinctly remember scouring the Penguins’ roster mid-week last week, at which time Zigomanis was not listed. Then, Friday, he’s listed. It likely was nothing more than a manual error, but it was intriguing, none-the-less.

Meh. Such is life. He’d have been a really nice depth player, addition to the WB/S roster and as a call-up guy. Could be Shero looks at Wyatt Smith as they same type of player, though.

some rumors i heard that the penguins of sign alex tanguay

The Pens have only $1.8M in cap space, 1.3M if they carry a seventh d-man. So, just for kicks, unless the Pens deal Dupuis and Tanguay is willing to take a one-year deal for $2.5M, there’s no way the Pens can sign Tanguay.
