Defensemen Ben Lovejoy has been called up to the NHL by the Pittsburgh Penguins according to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Beat Writer Jonathon Bombulie’s twitter page
Lovejoy was scratched for tonight’s game at the last minute making a callup the most likely reason before the game began.
Lovejoy began the season with what many thought was the inside track on the 6th or 7th defensemen spot with the Pittsburgh Penguins. But a poor training camp and a shoulder injury derailed those plans.
He had been catching fire lately and looked like his old self on the blue line for the Baby Pens. The Wilkes-Barre announcers were consistently praising his play over the past 2-3 games and he was often taking over shifts like he used to do last season.
He has 2G and 1A in 7 games this season.
This move likely means Orpik is at least questionable for Thursday’s game against the Devils.
If Orpik is out, Lovejoy will likely take some of his minutes on the PK and may even fill in a bit on the power play. Lovejoy and Goligoski made up one of the best PP point combinations in the league last season.

I see Orpik on the roster on the Pens’ NHL site. I guess we’ll see how it goes. I’d love to see Lovejoy play before Engelland.

Engelland looked very slow with his decision making. His wrist shot is rather putrid as well.
On the other hand, how the heck are they going to bench Skoula when Gonch is ok? He’s been playing great.

With the other injuries—Letang and Orpik—there may be no reason to at least in the short term. Let’s not forget the flu bug circulating about. Also, considering the condensed nature of this season, it might be smart to work a rotation to give players rest during the season.
