Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Ryan Whitney was held out of the third period of last night’s game against the Colorado Avalanche after injuring his groin.

Word this morning is that Whitney is being considered day-to-day, and the timetable for his return is uncertain.

Whitney has three goals and three assists in 12 games this season. If he misses any amount of time, the Penguins power play could suffer.

We will continue to update this story as the day progresses and news is made available.

If I were the Penguins I would at least consider bringing Letang up for any games that Whitney misses. If they did they could dress 7 defensemen and 11 forwards, playing Letang exclusively on the power play (and the occasional even strength shift if they think he can handle it).

This may sound like a crazy idea but consider that at least one of those those fourth line guys whether it be Laraque, Ruutu, or Christensen gets maybe 5-7 minutes of ice time every game. And how many times have you seen Christensen sit the bench virtually the entire third period this season? Maybe 2-3 times. What’s the difference whether you have 11 or 12 forwards when you roll 50 different lines each game anyhow. I think the good outweighs the bad especially considering that the Penguins would do well to have a right shot out there.

It may not be the worst of ideas, though there is one thing to consider right now:

Letang has been benched in WBS recently for not following coaches orders and for playing a less-than-passionate game. Promoting him to the NHL would directly contradict what Todd Richards is teaching and therefore would make for issues in the future.

The idea sounds logical in theory, as it would get Letang some NHL time and would get a right-handed shot on the power play point, but I’m just not sure how smart it is to go against the messages Todd Richards is sending in WBS.
