Penguins Blow Lead, Fall To Rangers 4-3 (OT)

In almost predictable fashion, the Pittsburgh Penguins managed to blow a two goal first period lead and eventually lose to the New York Rangers 4-3 in overtime.

Looking for their second win in as many games, the Penguins appeared confident to start the game, but with the start of the second period, the team became cocky, and the result wasn’t pretty.

The Rangers capitalized with three second period goals, all by defensemen.

With just minutes left in regulation, Petr Sykora poked in a garbage goal to take the game to overtime.

But, just as he giveth, Sykora helped taketh away, as he and linemate Erik Christensen failed to cover for a streaking Sergei Gonchar in overtime, allowing Ranger defenseman Paul Mara and Jason Strudwick to rush to the other end of the ice and, eventually, score the game winning goal.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 24 saves for the Penguins, while Henrik Lundqvist stopped 20 in the winning effort.

The bright side of tonight’s game is that Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby continued their dominance, extending their scoring streaks to match a team record (13 games) for concurrent streaks. Mario Lemieux and Paul Coffey were the other duo to achieve the feat.

They’ll rebound eventually. Sooner or later changes will be made and this team will get red hot. They have too much talent not to.

I sure hope you’re right. But I was just thinking, I’ll just enjoy the games as they go, look for the bright spots, there’s always next year LOL
I don’t think they are pullling out of this funk, they will have to work their way thru it, the hard way. And build on it next season.

Remember, though, they aren’t exactly that far in a hole yet. I mean, seriously, they’re a few wins shy of .500. With 60+ games remaining, there is PLENTY of time to pull out of this funk. The team has shown this year that the talent is there, it’s just a matter of putting together 60 minutes of good hockey. They did it last year with a similar team, so why not this year? And also, remember that, at this time last year, the team wasn’t much better. They were .500 at the all star break and then turned it on for the second half.

I’m not saying it will or won’t happen, but looking ahead to next season prior to Thanksgiving is a bit premature, especially when the team has the talent this team has.

I guess what I’m saying is, I’m not gonna get all excited and worried now, that way when they pull out of this slump, I’ll be happy lol. If they don’t, i won’t be so upset.
