As expected, the Pittsburgh Penguins have placed Mark Recchi on re-entry waivers effective at noon today.
Every team in the NHL will have until noon tomorrow to make a claim for Recchi, and the winning team will be on the hook for half of his remaining salary, while the Penguins will continue to pay the other half.
Lyle Richardson of Spector’s Hockey says there is a good chance Recchi will be claimed.
“Considering how quickly Recchi’s been placed on re-entry waivers I’d say the Penguins already got word from several clubs that they’ll take Recchi off their hands if they recall him. Looks like Recchi could have a new NHL home by noon eastern on Saturday.”
He also noted that, according to the Camden Courier-Post, Philadelphia Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren has shown an interest in Recchi, but believes one of the 25 teams with higher waiver priority will claim the veteran before he gets to the Flyers.
Only time will tell what will happen to Recchi, but it appears as though he is on the verge of finding a new NHL home.
