One week to go until what many believe to be the “Christmas” of the hockey season. As general managers around the league try to squeeze out that one more game of evaluation before they pull the trigger on a “sell” deal. As agents vehemently deny their clients’ will waive their no-trade clauses. And as fans of historically awful trade deadline teams bite their nails down to their knuckles. We collectively wait.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have made four roster moves today, three of them involving the AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre.
The sign outside NHL offices read “[203] days since our last big trade” when they opened up for business at 9 am this morning. And while Radim Vrbata and Kevyn Adams feel a bit betrayed by the previous statement, it’s more or less true. But now, on February 11, 2008, Bryan Murray and Jim Rutherford have given our water coolers some company for the first time in a long while.

It’s that time of the year. After January 1st every year, it seems that teams kick their contract negotiations into high gear and start making more and more trades. This is the time of the year (along with the offseason) that makes my job a lot of fun around here. There’s been plenty of re-signings and a trade to announce as we look back at the past few days around the league.
As time ticks down to the last 50 days before the trade deadline, a very quiet market could heat up very quickly. The cap hits on players have diminished to roughly half now, now that roughly half the season is gone and that opens up many more possibilities on the trade front.
The NHL roster freeze is rapidly approaching and any deadline in the NHL is usually a cause for some activity. Since a player’s cap hit “lessens” (so to speak) as the season goes on, trades become a bit more palatable in the later stages of the season. As for now, however, the rumor mill is always churning.
