A lot has been happening in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton as the Pittsburgh Penguins have relied heavily on their farm team for reinforcements as well as conditioning. Here’s a look at what has happened over the past week ‘on the farm’.

TRANSACTIONS:

The WBS Penguins welcome back C Ryan Stone and RW Jonathan Filewich as well as C/LW Tyler Kennedy (recovered from mono) and G Marc-Andre Fleury (conditioning – ankle).

Pittsburgh has recalled D Alex Goligoski as their seventh defenseman. He has not made his NHL game debut yet. It is unknown if or when he will do so or how long this recall will last.

Also, Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero announced that D Deryk Engelland was signed to a two-year contract extension on his NHL deal.

INJURIES:

The only injury to a WBS regular is RW Dennis Bonvie, still not recovered from back spasms. In his absence, Engelland and D Paul Bissonnette have split his fighting duties.

GAME RESULTS:

Wednesday – Norfolk 3, WBS 2 (SO)
Norfolk – Stewart (10), Lessard (14) SO-Lessard, Wanvig
WBS – Brent (10), Wallace (8)
The story in this game was the Penguins losing a two-goal lead and the momentum on Karl Stewart’s shorthanded goal. WBS was also unable to score in the shootout.

Friday – WBS 3, Portland 0
Portland – no scoring.
WBS – McLean (16), Minard (21), Kennedy (4)
Curry (WBS) – 23 saves
The headline before the game was the return of two former Penguins to the Wachovia Arena as visitors, C Stephen Dixon and D Andy Schneider. The headliner after the game was WBS G John Curry, who seems to be making a strong case that he wants to be the #1 goalie here.

Saturday – Hershey 5, WBS 3
Hershey – Clymer (9), Bourque 2 (16, 17), Gordon (11), Joudrey (7)
WBS – Gove (10), James (8), Havern (1)
This game was an absolute nightmare for Penguins fans. The Hershey Bears outplayed the Penguins completely. After a huge win over a tough Pirates team the night before, Wilkes-Barre had no excuse for this one. The lone highlight was LW Ned Havern’s first AHL goal. Congrats to him.

UPCOMING GAMES:
Wed., 2/13 Norfolk (M-A Fleury’s WBS season debut) 7:15 PM Fri., 2/15 vs. Philadelphia 7:05 PM Sat., 2/16 Bridgeport 7:05 PM
Mon., 2/18 @ Binghamton 7:05 PM
