Marc-Andre Fleury Posts Win In AHL Conditioning Stint

Pittsburgh Penguins G Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 30 of 31 shots against the Norfolk Admirals in the first game of a conditioning stint. He was very smooth in his first game back, even taking some chances playing the puck, something that Penguins fans have been wishing he would do a better job of.

To be fair, the Norfolk Admirals are one of the worst teams in the AHL, so this may not have been a great test. Coupling that with the fact that Wilkes-Barre is one of the better defensive teams in the AHL, this was not a game that Fleury needed to steal. Although the Admirals outshot the Penguins 31-27, the shots coming from Admirals’ sticks were of a poorer quality due to the stifling WBS defensive effort from the defensemen and the forwards.

A better test will come on Friday night when MAF will return to WBS ice to take on the division-leading Philadelphia Phantoms. Faceoff Factor will be there to provide coverage of the lone home game in the Fleury conditioning tour.

Hey, it’s a start on his road back to OUR team! =D

Realistically, he could have had the shutout. The only goal scored was a deflection. In fact, it may have even hit a second player on the way in. No goalie should be expected to stop a shot like that.

But, again, Norfolk wasn’t a big test, so Friday will be a big test against Philly.

I’m really happy to see Fleury back in action. I’m glad that he didn’t face a tough team last night. I think it’s better to ease him back into the game since he hasn’t played in so long. Now with a win and a little confidence, he can step it up against Philly.
