Tonight, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Baby Penguins defeated the Philadelphia Phantoms to take the series 4-1. The Penguins win the East Division Championship, and advance to the next round of the playoffs.
The 1st period was a hard defensive battle between each teams, until finally at 19:14 with only seconds remaining, the Pens took the 1-0 lead into the locker room.
C Dustin Jeffrey took a feed from F Ryan Stone on an odd-man break, and scored his 2nd career playoff goal. Jeffrey scored last game as well. This kid is going to be huge next year in Wilkes-Barre.
Philadelphia would find their way on the scoresheet, 7 minutes into the 2nd period to tie the game at 1-1.
Five minutes later, league leading F Tim Brent found LW Chris Minard who buried yet another one-time slapshot into the cage. This was Minard’s 8th goal of the playoffs.
Then, to top it off the Pens scored their last goal of the game only 4 minutes into the 3rd period. LW Tim Wallace put in his 2nd of the playoffs.
LW Paul Bissonnette was injured in the 3rd period, when the Phantom’s LW Triston Grant put a cheap knee shot on him. Grant’s penalties are one of many things that hurt the Phantoms in this series. The injury is to his toe, but Bissonnette was said to be healed in a few days.
Rookie goaltender John Curry was dominant for the Pens once again, stopping 22 shots out of 23 taken. Has a rookie goalie ever been this good?
The Baby Pens would end the series, and the Phantom’s season as they win in regulation with a final score of 3-1. They take the series 4 games to 1, and move on to the next round.
The Pens will take on the Portland Pirates next. For further analysis, look for the Series Preview later on this week. Congratulations to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on their East Division Championship win.
