The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have signed goaltenders Adam Berkhoel and Curtis Darling.
Berkhoel could challenge for the number two goalie spot in Wilkes-Barre. Dave Brown played well last year, but Berkhoel put up a 2.93 GAA with Detroit’s AHL affiliate last season.
Berkhoel also has played in 9 NHL games in his career, posting a 2-4-1 record with a 3.80 GAA.
Darling spent most of last season with the Wheeling Nailers, and it is likely that he will remain there as their number one goaltender to begin the year.
The Pens also signed right winger Tom Goebel to an AHL contract. Goebel played for Ohio State University last year, where he was a stand out. In his college career, he has scored 115 points (54+61) in 147 games.
Lastly, the Pens have signed local player Corey Cowick to an amateur contract. The 19-year-old left winger has good size at 6’2” and 205 lbs. Cowick is a Beacon Hill resident.

Just a minor nitpick, but Corey Cowick isn’t a “local” player – at least not for the Penguins. He is local for the Ottawa 67s, his Junior league team, but not for the Penguins.
It will be interesting to see if Cowick can earn a contract of some sort in Camp, though – he’s a 6’2” left wing who apparently plays a power forward style of game, if the stuff I’ve read is accurate. Of course, most players who come in on Amateur Tryouts don’t end up with contracts, but it will be interesting to see if he’s got some skill to go with his size.
