Welcome to the first edition of this year’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Baby Penguins report. Let’s take a look back at the past week and how the team performed.

W-B/Scranton 7 at Norfolk 3
December 10th

This contest would mark the second game in a row where the Pens recorded 7 goals. C Mark Letestu is proving himself in the line-up, as he scored 2 goals and added one assist. Due to the call-ups in Pittsburgh, F Tommy Goebel was called up from the Wheeling Nailers. Goebel tallied 1 goal and 1 assist in his first game with the Penguins. This speedy winger was leading the ECHL in points, previous to his promotion. To add, the day after being sent back from Pittsburgh, Janne Pesonen had 3 assists – in the first period. Paul Bissonnette was also one part shy of the Gordie Howe Hat Trick. He had 1 goal and 1 assist, 0 PIM.

W-B/Scranton 4 at Syracuse 3
December 12th

The Penguins win another game, but this one was a little closer. Pesonen was named the first star of the game (1 goal). G Adam Berkhoel stopped 21 of the 24 shots he faced to earn the victory. Danny Richmond got into a nice fight with Syracuse’s Kevin Harvey. Luca Caputi, who is starting to turn the jets on tallied his 7th goal of the season. He is currently riding a 3-game point streak. He also got into his first two professional fights this past month.

Portland 1 at W-B/Scranton 5
December 13th

Last night, the Penguins won again carrying the win streak to 3 games. It was another blow out at the Wachovia Arena. Chris Minard in his return to Wilkes-Barre, potted two goals (league leading 18th, and 19th). Ben Lovejoy scored his 5th goal of the year. John Curry was also sent back, and he stopped 23 of the 24 shots he faced. Richmond scored his first goal of the season, and dropped the gloves for the second consecutive game. Ryan Stone and Paul Bissonnette also were involved in scraps of their own. Biz Nasty leads the team with 11 fights. He has 17 total, if you include preseason and his time with the NHL Penguins.

Bob, the reasons Bissonnette was returned to Wilkes-Barre were one – he didn’t get any playing time and two – he still needed to work on his game as a forward.

He had been playing defense, up until last season when he converted to a left wing.

But he’s made huge improvements and the Pens are definitely high on him. If Godard gets injured for a long period of time, I could see Biz Nasty getting called up.

    Dave,

Henrich has been playing effectively on the fourth line, mostly alongside Tommy Goebel and Paul Bissonnette.

Those three have been contributing in the points column these past few games.

Henrich set up Bissonnette for his first goal of the season with a pass from behind the net.

In the same game, Henrich had a breakaway. He deked to the forehand and was denied, but Goebel scored his first of the season.

    Dave, you are correct.

The fourth line of Bissonnette-Henrich-Goebel didn’t get much playing time tonight. Maybe because of the tight score, they didn’t want to focus on the fourth line.

The last few games were blowouts for the most part, which would explain their extra ice time.
