The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins defeated the Manchester Monarchs 2-1 last night at home in a relatively lifeless hockey game.
Brian Boyle opened the scoring for Manchester late in the first with a slap shot that beat G John Curry cleanly for his tenth goal of the season.
A turning point came in the second period when WBS D Deryk Engelland and Manchester RW Kevin Westgarth fought. The fight ended with the two players clutched together. Neither player hit the ground. I’m not a boxing analyst, but it seemed that Engelland took the decision in this one.
At that point in the game, the shots were tied at 10 for each team. From that fight on, the shots were 24-6 in favor of the Penguins.
About ten seconds after the fight, Manchester took a slashing penalty. On the faceoff after the penalty, WBS F Kurtis McLean caught a stick in the face. That high stick drew blood, so Manchester was now given a five-minute major.
On that 5-on-3 power play, Tim Brent scored on a rebound to tie the game. Just a little later, Ryan Stone deposited another rebound on the 5-on-4 to score the eventual game-winner.
Although Brent and Stone scored the goals, Engelland and McLean made the necessary plays to make sure that the Penguins could come back and win.
Curry stopped 15 of 16 shots to get the win.
